20 Free Ebooks For Photographers

20 Free Ebooks For Photographers | The Art of Photography | Scoop.it
Photography is an incredibly rewarding hobby, and with the wealth of digital cameras available nowadays, is one that’s well within most people’s reach. Morgan Levy Interview: Perceiving the Lonely Pauses Before Movement and Capturing Its Form at PhotoWhoa Blog | Discover how you can be a better photographer

Morgan Levy Interview: Perceiving the Lonely Pauses Before Movement and Capturing Its Form at PhotoWhoa Blog | Discover how you can be a better photographer | The Art of Photography | Scoop.it
It’ll be clear when looking at the forthcoming images that there is a lot going on in conceptual street/landscape/portrait photographer Morgan Levy’s work. Many of her images will seem caught in an impenetrable stillness.
C.O.'s insight:

"Though I often work in picturesque places, the intent isn’t to depict beautiful landscapes. It’s to find and create an image (or the raw material from which to composite an image) that represents or evokes a specific idea or thought. Using landscape to successfully convey ideas is challenging. And I don’t always succeed."  This is exactly what I want to learn!

"I’m attracted to ambiguous undertones. If a subject smiles in a photograph, the viewer thinks he or she understands something about this person or this moment. Expressions I’m drawn to are ones where the answer isn’t obvious, where the viewer is left wondering. This is what I mean by a “pregnant pause”: a moment embedded with meaning and significance that is somewhat withheld."

So insightful to me.  A really great interveiw!!!

Garry Winogrand: the restless genius who gave street photography attitude

Garry Winogrand: the restless genius who gave street photography attitude | The Art of Photography | Scoop.it
Garry Winogrand pounded the streets of America every day of his life photographing reluctant subjects – and he left behind 6,500 undeveloped films when he died. A powerful new retrospective makes sense of the torrent of imagery by the prolific American master, writes Sean O’Hagan
C.O.'s insight:

In this article, we will have a basic understanding about Garry Winogrand's street photos style.  According to the author, Garry was not hiding somewhere likeJoel Meyerowitz when he take the photos. Nor was he as intrusive as Bruce Gilden.  Still, we can see the unique moment at each photo.  As the author said, viewers of Garry

s photos always had a desire to know what happen next after the photo was taken.

In short, this and the previous articles together can give us a glimpse of Garry Winogrand's work.

Colorful Abstract Forms Created By Dropping Pigments in Water [PHOTOS]

Colorful Abstract Forms Created By Dropping Pigments in Water [PHOTOS] | The Art of Photography | Scoop.it
Color and water can create some of the most captivating images. New York-based artist Kim Keever decided to explore this and create a series of mesmerizing abstract photographs of colorful paint pigment as it falls and forms in water. Keever creates her images by dropping paint pigment into a large aquarium tank of water and […]
C.O.'s insight:

We have seen how water drops ( with or without color) were captured by many photographers.  This one is a new attempt.  I tend to think it's not as complicate as capturing water drops in terms of devices to be used.  Will find a time to test it out.

Jane Bown: a life in photography – in pictures

Jane Bown: a life in photography – in pictures | The Art of Photography | Scoop.it
Her first commission for the Observer was a portrait of philosopher Bertrand Russell in 1949. From then, Bown photographed the great and the good, the rich and the poor, the ordinary and extraordinary with a compassionate and gentle eye
C.O.'s insight:

I pay little attention to portraits cause it's too "artificial" that everything is set up to the perfect.  However, Jane Bown's works were not only perfect in terms of techniques, but also triggers viewers' curiosity about the person(s) in the picture.  Particularly the person's eyes and their facial expression.   What were s/he thinking at that moment?  An interaction btw the viewers and the photos.

Phillippe Diederich Interview: Revolutionaries, Mexico, and a Photographer | PhotoWhoa Blog | The Art of Photography | Scoop.it
C.O.'s insight:

Diederich bornt in Haiti and his family was expelled to Mexico and he grew up there.  Now in the US and always considers himself in exile, which I think deeply influences his works.  Only a handful photos show in the article, but all of these photos shows stories.  Some not only 1 but 2, like the child in the train.  It`s the boy caught my attention first, but then immediately, what happened outside the window told another story.   Shows Diederich`s sensitive of the world, not just a good eye.

Nigel Grimmer Interview: Self-Portraits Done in Art Drag | PhotoWhoa Blog | The Art of Photography | Scoop.it
C.O.'s insight:

"my students copy selfie memes they see on the Internet – planking, owling, hotdog leg, etc. Often these memes are only understood formally. Their origins are lost. We like to feel part of something, and we don’t like standing out as different; we mirror the images without knowing why. "

Nigel's projects will lead us to rethink the creative side of taking photos.  Not as a photo but use diff ways / medias and turn it to be an art form.
