Morgan Levy Interview: Perceiving the Lonely Pauses Before Movement and Capturing Its Form at PhotoWhoa Blog | Discover how you can be a better photographer

Morgan Levy Interview: Perceiving the Lonely Pauses Before Movement and Capturing Its Form at PhotoWhoa Blog | Discover how you can be a better photographer | The Art of Photography | Scoop.it
It’ll be clear when looking at the forthcoming images that there is a lot going on in conceptual street/landscape/portrait photographer Morgan Levy’s work. Many of her images will seem caught in an impenetrable stillness.
C.O.'s insight:

"Though I often work in picturesque places, the intent isn’t to depict beautiful landscapes. It’s to find and create an image (or the raw material from which to composite an image) that represents or evokes a specific idea or thought. Using landscape to successfully convey ideas is challenging. And I don’t always succeed."  This is exactly what I want to learn!

"I’m attracted to ambiguous undertones. If a subject smiles in a photograph, the viewer thinks he or she understands something about this person or this moment. Expressions I’m drawn to are ones where the answer isn’t obvious, where the viewer is left wondering. This is what I mean by a “pregnant pause”: a moment embedded with meaning and significance that is somewhat withheld."

So insightful to me.  A really great interveiw!!!

Jane Bown: a life in photography – in pictures

Jane Bown: a life in photography – in pictures | The Art of Photography | Scoop.it
Her first commission for the Observer was a portrait of philosopher Bertrand Russell in 1949. From then, Bown photographed the great and the good, the rich and the poor, the ordinary and extraordinary with a compassionate and gentle eye
C.O.'s insight:

I pay little attention to portraits cause it's too "artificial" that everything is set up to the perfect.  However, Jane Bown's works were not only perfect in terms of techniques, but also triggers viewers' curiosity about the person(s) in the picture.  Particularly the person's eyes and their facial expression.   What were s/he thinking at that moment?  An interaction btw the viewers and the photos.

Instagram Photographers to Follow in All 50 States

Instagram Photographers to Follow in All 50 States | The Art of Photography | Scoop.it
One for every state from Alabama to Wisconsin, Florida to Alaska, Maine to California
C.O.'s insight:

I don't think "instagram photographers" is a proper label to these photographers.  Instagram is just a media to tell the story & to create the art.  If we look at the photos, we can see the solid skills of composition and lighting, etc from these photographers.  They probably can create the same quality of work regardless of the media.

‘My eldest son went to see this picture in an exhibition… it really upset him. I think it made him realise how poor we were’
C.O.'s insight:

This is an unique story.  I think 99.9% we would hear a photo from the photographer's perspective.  It's very rarely to hear the thought from the subject in the photo.  This is a very touching interview and retrospective from the subject in the photo.
