Julie's insight:

Architects are responsible for designing places for everyday use. The duties of an architect are many. They include marketing and presenting projects to acquire new jobs, consulting with clients about their demands, estimating the factors of the projects, preparing scaled drawings of the project, and more.

The discussion between architects and clients include objectives, requirements, and budget. Architects may contribute in determining its impact on the environment, site selection, and the analysis of costs. When the initial proposal is concluded, a finalized plan is drawn which shows building’s appearance and details on its construction. It is accompanied by drawings of the structural system, such as ventilation.

Architects must be mindful of building codes, disability regulations, and other requirements.

Architects may also help clients find contractors and negotiate construction contracts. They may visit the construction sites to ensure that all details of the project are being followed thoroughly.

Traditional pen and paper have been replaced by computer-aided design and drafting and building information modeling.

This article is more detailed on the jobs of an architect compared to the more concise article that I had scooped before. It is also more updated. It’s details gave me a good insight on what it would be like to work as an architect.

Julie's insight:

An architect designs houses, buildings, and many more structures. Their designs, however, aren’t exclusive only to the appearance of the structure. They must ensure the safety and strength of the buildings and that it fits the users’ needs.

The process begins with a discussion between the architect and the client about the client’s demands. Then the architect conjures up a drawing of the structure for the client to review. When the ideas are agreed upon, the architect draws up a finalized plan. This plan demonstrates the appearance of the structure and how to achieve that construction wise.

In order to practice, architects must be licensed. To achieve this, they need a degree, must complete an internship, and pass the entire license exam. An innovative mind and communication skills are needed to be a good architect.

This article gave an overview of the field of architecture. It even gave an overview of how many jobs architects held in the year 2008 and gave further details on this topic. I, however, wish that it had given a more recent outlook. Other than this, much of the information was enticing. Growing up, I was always fascinated by buildings; now, the idea of being able to design them excites me.
