"SMART is a longtime admirer and sponsor of the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning (NJCTL), an organization that developed their Progressive Science Initiative (PSI) and Progressive Mathematics Initiative (PMI) courses in a way that blends direct instruction with student-centered active discussion methods.
"We were so pleased for Dr. Bob Goodman and everyone on the NJCTL team when they informed us that “six of the top twelve New Jersey schools for Advanced Placement Physics B participation were schools who use the PSI program.” It was also significant to discover that the PSI schools “served dramatically more students of color (70%) than the non-PSI schools (8%)” and that “PSI schools served more low-income students (61%) than non-PSI schools (4%).” The results for PSI schools in NJ signals that closing the STEM achievement gap is possible regardless of student background. Congratulations NJ students! And kudos to your teachers! You can read the full story here. PMI also received some recent attention in Colorado. Adams County School District 50’s use of PMI was showcased in a video on their website. The program’s encouragement of teamwork and problem-solving was highlighted as unique attributes of PMI that they hope will lead to future student success. Keep us posted!"
