Introducing this work

Introducing this work | :: The 4th Era :: | Scoop.it

For the purposes of this Scoop.it site, the history of human interaction with information may be divided into 4 eras. The first (spoken) era ended with the invention of writing around 3000-4000 BC. The second era ended with the invention of the printing press in 1440. The third era ended, and the fourth began, with the invention of the Internet (depending how one defines its operational beginning) somewhere between 1969 and 1982. We now exist early, but decidedly, in the fourth era.

 

All readers may not agree with this interpretation of the history of information, especially with the division and numbering of the eras. That is not the main point. Rather, it is that humankind is presently existing in an era distinctly different from the one that preceded it -- that in fact, this new era is accompanied with, and characterized by, a new - and quite different - information landscape. This new Internet information landscape will challenge, disrupt, and overpower the print-oriented one that came before it. It will not completely obliterate that which preceded it, but it will render it to a subsidiary, rather than primary, level of influence.

 

Just as the printing press altered humanity's relationship with information, thereby resulting in massive restructuring of political, religious, economic, social, educational, cultural, scientific, and other realms of life; so too will the Internet occasion analogous transformations in the corresponding universe of present and future human activity.

 

This site will concern itself primarily with how K-20 education in the US, and the people who comprise its constituencies, may be affected by this transformative movement from one era to the next. All ideas considered here appear, to me at least, to impact the learning enterprise in some way. Accordingly, this work looks at the present and the future through a lens that is predominantly, but far from entirely, a digital one. -JL

Three years ago, we learned that a Dutch team had developed a biological concrete that could repair its own cracks. They said it might be two or three years before it found its way into the larger world—and now, we’re getting a look at its real-world applications.

The concrete is a collaboration between two scientists named Eric Schlangen and Henk Jonkers, who are profiled today in an update on their research from CNN. The duo first made news in 2012, when they introduced their “biocement,” which uses bacteria to patch up the cracks in concrete that lead to structural degradation.

"e.Republic’s Center for Digital Education (CDE) has announced the results and winners of its Digital Community Colleges Survey.  In its tenth year, the survey analyzes how community colleges use digital technologies to improve services to students, faculty, staff and the community at large.  Findings include: 58% support student job placement through online resume-building tools, 43% have strategies in place for the use of mobile devices and 81% of colleges surveyed use cloud computing services resulting in cost savings.

"...economists say the study offers perhaps the most detailed portrait yet of upward mobility — and the lack of it. The findings suggest that geography does not merely separate rich from poor but also plays a large role in determining which poor children achieve the so-called American dream.

"How neighborhoods affect children “has been a quandary with which social science has been grappling for decades,” said David B. Grusky, director of the Center on Poverty and Inequality at Stanford University, who was not involved in the research. “This delivers the most compelling evidence yet that neighborhoods matter in a really big way.”

"Making allows students to learn by doing and solve problems by tinkering, trial and error. Minecraft is a 3D sandbox game, which has made its way into classrooms because it engages students across a range of subjects. Imagine the learning that happens when these two popular education movements are combined.

"The outcome is a powerhouse of student engagement, says Mike Washburn, head of computer science at Richmond Hill Montessori & Elementary Private School in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  In his mind, games shouldn’t be relegated to the fringes in classrooms. Educators should leverage them to engage students and drive new ways of thinking.

"And when it comes to teaching social studies, a subject that often gets a bad rap when supported by only worksheets and textbook reading, incorporating Minecraft can create an explosion of learning. Game playing takes the “boring” right out of it and can be a highly successful way to teach social studies, Washburn argues."

Among the advice new parents receive is to read to their babies early and often. The hope is that sharing books together will help children’s language development and eventually, turn them into successful readers.

"Now there is evidence that reading to young children is in fact associated with differences in brain activity supporting early reading skills. The research will be presented Saturday, April 25 at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in San Diego."

Arizona State University, one of the nation’s largest universities, is joining with edX, a nonprofit online venture founded by M.I.T. and Harvard, to offer an online freshman year that will be available worldwide with no admissions process and full university credit.

"In the new Global Freshman Academy, each credit will cost $200, but students will not have to pay until they pass the courses, which will be offered on the edX platform as MOOCs, or Massive Open Online Courses.

“Leave your G.P.A., your SATs, your recommendations at home,” said Anant Agarwal, the chief executive of edX. “If you have the will to learn, just bring your Internet connection and yourself, and you can get a year of college credit.”

"Watson has now been trained in molecular biology and finance, written a cookbook, been put to work in oil exploration. It is learning to help solve crimes. This fall, Wired aired predictions that Watson would soon be the world’s most perfect medical diagnostician. It has folded so seamlessly into the world that, according to IBM, the Watson program has been applied in 75 industries in 17 countries, and tens of thousands of people are using its applications in their own work. In these experiences, Watson has functioned as an early probe into the relationship between humans and intelligent machines — what we need from them, what gaps they fill, what fears they generate.


"The honest way into philosophy is by accident, through the disorienting flash of a new experience. Watson’s creators, many of whom have worked on the project since its inception, talk about their machine ­differently than Tegmark does. They see a chronology of experiences, of developing skills and propulsive failures, as if the machine had its own biography. Some of them describe their experience with Watson in more personal terms, as if they were the parent and the machine the child. Last October, IBM moved the project into a new home, a foreboding office tower that inscribes shadows over Astor Place, which has given Watson a neat, humanlike path through time: Its early years spent in a family atmosphere in the suburbs; then an educational course to prepare it to support itself in a more complicated world; then, to make money, a move to the East Village and a search for employment. It has also meant that it is possible to leave your office, as I did one recent afternoon, walk across lower Manhattan, take an elevator upstairs, situate yourself before a stadium of screens, notice what looks like a small stack of hard drives in the corner, contemplate the human place in the scheme of things, and hear a placid computerized voice say, “Hello, Watson here. What are we working on today?”

"In a new study of 50,000 adults in 25 countries, daughters of working mothers completed more years of education, were more likely to be employed and in supervisory roles and earned higher incomes. Having a working mother didn’t influence the careers of sons, which researchers said was unsurprising because men were generally expected to work — but sons of working mothers did spend more time on child care and housework.

"Some of these effects were strong in the United States. Here, daughters of working mothers earned 23 percent more than daughters of stay-at-home mothers, after controlling for demographic factors, and sons spent seven and a half more hours a week on child care and 25 more minutes on housework."

Tariq Abu-Hamdeh and his classmates at Southridge High School can’t quite remember whether 5-year-old Robert lives in Illinois or Pennsylvania, or maybe somewhere else on the far side of the Mississippi River.

But they all know that young Robert wants his brand new hand to be red and blue like Spider-Man, and they really know how to configure one of Southridge’s new 3-D printers to make it happen.

While putting the final touches on the functional plastic hand in Monday morning’s Engineering and Design class, the teenagers also glued a Spider-Man logo on to the top.

The Southridge class will ship out the prosthetic device late this week, and pretty soon, Robert will be able to pick up his kindergarten backpack like a super hero.

The police fired rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades at striking teachers in the southern city Curitiba on Wednesday, leaving more than 150 people injured. The police said they responded after a few protesters tried to gain access to a state congressional building where legislators voted to make cuts to teachers’ pension plans. But the authorities’ response was widely criticized as heavy-handed. Live television showed the police firing the nonlethal weapons into tightly packed clusters of striking teachers after some protesters tried to break through police lines around the Paraná State congressional building. Water cannons were also used to push back demonstrators. A statement on the Curitiba municipal government’s website said at least 150 people had been treated for injuries. The state security department said about 20 police officers had been hurt."

School administration can be very fast paced and detail oriented with many decisions, big and small, made throughout the course of a day. With one principal and two assistant principals, the amount of information that we have to consume can be quite overwhelming. We've found Voxer invaluable in helping us to stay connected and communicate more effectively during the school day. As soon as there's a decision that another administrator needs to know about, we no longer need to schedule a meeting, craft an email, or even send a text. Voxer provides an opportunity to leave a detailed message that can be retrieved by the rest of the team when time permits.

It also allows us to engage in a more reflective practice with time to consider a response instead of providing immediate feedback. Whereas in the past, we had to carve out time for all three administrators to be in the same place at the same time, we've found that sharing, discussing, and even debating ideas via Voxer has cut our meeting time down from 4-6 hours to 1-2 hours a week, allowing us more time to collaborate with teachers and communicate with students.
