"Now that educators and parents are on a full revolt against the addiction to testing in the United States when it comes to public education, we have to arrive at a point where we have to consider the possibility of suing the U.S Department of Education and a few SEA’s. The suits would occur on the premise that NCLB and RtTT do not grant administrators, parents, and students due process protections when it comes to opting out of federally mandated tests and that the initiatives enacted create hostile learning environments.

So when a student walks into my classroom, I think what their struck with is that I'm not the one that's talking the most in the classroom. There's a lot of voice and choice in the classroom.

 

For so many years, they would receive grades and not know where they came from, what assignments led up to them, how they would be assessed. Now they're involved in not only creating the units and deciding how they will assess themselves, but also how they will self-assess their work and assess each other.

At Massabesic Middle School, learners are unpacking the standards and are given "voice and choice" in how they learn and how they will express what they know and understand.  This is an excellent example of what student-centered learning is and how teachers and learners roles change. Above all, the ownership to learning takes place where the learners are driving their own learning.

 

A thank you to the Maine DOE and Ms. Downing-Ford in sharing this video and illustrating the power behind student-centered learning!

Worth a watch. I'm struck with the fact that these students are using education jargon, like: "unpacking the standards." Not sure how I feel about that.

"On Thursday, November 3rd, 2011, members of the Metro Vancouver education community from a range of perspectives met to address the big questions around Personalised Learning. As an organization, BCASCD promotes the exemplary practices in curriculum and develops leadership and professional capacity for the success of all learners. As such, a roundtable on Personalised Learning was held. The executive invited educators from a range of districts and on various pathways of their careers in education, including student-teachers, classroom teachers, district support teachers, vice-principals, principals, district principals, post-secondary teacher-educators, and senior administrators.

 

Four areas around Personalised Learning were discussed, with the intent of creating a working document demonstrating what Personalised Learning may look like at a class, school, district and provincial level."

 

These areas were:

> Stakeholders:  Who are they?  What are their needs?

> Competencies/skills/knowledge: What are the ‘must-haves’? What are the ‘would-like-to-haves’?

> Assessment/Reporting: How does Personalised Learning change reporting schedules, assessments (AFL) and student engagement;

> Structures: What are the environmental/space/time requirements.

 

Read about what ideas emerged from this roundtable discussion as British Columbia embarks on implementing personalised learning in their province.

Kevin McLaughlin shares how he has personalized learning for every learner and how this experience has surpassed any aspirations he had.  He offers a few pointers on how to begin.

 

"Personalising Learning is not something you can pick up and start in your own class tomorrow. You need to take into account most if not all of the following.

 

> It takes a lot of thought and effort

> It takes time to build up a clear picture of every learner in your class and where they are in their own learning

> It takes courage to stand back as a teacher and let the learning happen of its own accord

> It requires a vision and belief that it will work

> It needs careful planning but still allow for change at a moments notice

> It needs the voice of the learner to be listened to to steer the direction of the learning

> It needs you to rethink your classroom layout

> It needs you to rethink your approach to teaching and learning

 

In the last 8 weeks I have witnessed learners blossoming, growing, developing skills that would have otherwise been kept contained due to an over adherence to the 3-step teaching model (Introduction, Main Activity, Plenary)."
