Context Is King: Why Today's MOOCs Don't Meet Corporate Needs | WIRED | The 21st Century | Scoop.it
courosa/Flickr In 1996, Bill Gates declared that “content is king.” Gates was talking about the Internet, and the publishing, creating, and accessing capabilities that came as a result. However, the same has been true in education for a very long time. Education — from elementary to college to corporate learning — has relied on the…

Why "Social Learning" should stay linked to MOOCs ?

Indeed, social activities should be learnt in a social way, not in teacher-student way in a classroom or in a MOOC.

I'm not sure though why the author talks about modern (not social) versus original (social) MOOCs. Both exist at the same time and the social aspect mostly depends on the skills taught.

Millennials Rely On Social Media For News

Millennials Rely On Social Media For News | The 21st Century | Scoop.it
Today's younger generation has a reputation of being glued to the cellphones and tablets. It's where they chat with their friends, find out the latest hot spots in town and, believe it or not, keep up with the world. In their own way, of course.

Probably not news to most of us (no pun intended), since it seems to me that millennials thrive on immediacy of news, and attribute well served by social media. The desire (or even recognition) for accuracy, or journalistic insight, appears to be less important. But maybe my perspective is influenced by my 17-year career at Reuters, where accuracy always took precedent over timeliness.

social media has value "in building relationships with customers, offering responsive technical support, and engaging efforts to establish a sustainable base of consumer advocates."

As usual, these things are never in black and white.  Looking for a direct, linear relationship between social media 'marketing' and the bottom seems equally flawed.

Four Reasons to Worry About "Personalized Learning" - Alfie Kohn

Tocqueville’s observations about the curious version of democracy that Americans were cultivating in the 1830s have served as a touchstone for social scientists ever since. I chose this resource to inform me about the latest technology trends.

Technology is ever changing and in today's schools technology can be used to enhance the learning of every student. Technology should not, however be used to replace teaching. Too many educators today see technology as a way to keep students busy, This should not be how technology is utilized.

As a future leader, it is imperative that I provide opportunities for teachers to experiment and use technology in a productive way. In my school, teachers use technology for research, math, and google classroom.

We need to be careful.

Gracie Marcoux's curator insight, March 24, 2015 2:29 AM

The article, in summary, goes over how there are so many users of social media around the world, especially young adults. Apparently, terrorists absolutely love twitter. What we need to realize is that social media can be taken as a terrorism breeding house, and everyone is subjugated to its danger.

This applies to terrorism in Unit 4. How? Instead of direct attacks like 9/11, people are now targeted worlds away. And that's far more terrifying.
