The Rise of Educational Technology as a Sociocultural and Ideological Phenomenon

The push for educational technology exists within a broader political, economic, ideological, and technological context. The all-too-common ignorance of this context and the subtleties of learning itself may prove problematic for edtech — and higher education's future.

Why 2U Decided to Buy a Little Known South African Company for $103M (EdSurge News) | The 21st Century | Scoop.it
This week 2U surprised many education-watchers when it made its very first acquisition, dropping $103-million on a 9-year-old South-African company called GetSmarter. If that name wasn’t on your radar, you can be forgiven—apparently even 2U’s leaders hadn’t heard of it until about a year ago.So what

Yes, You Can Measure White Privilege

Yes, You Can Measure White Privilege | The 21st Century | Scoop.it
Whenever anyone slips the words “white privilege” into a conversation, it immediately builds an impenetrable wall. For some white people, the words elicit an uneasy feeling because, for them, the term is accusatory without being specific. It is a nebulous concept that seemingly reduces the complex mishmash of history, racism and social phenomena to a nonspecific groupthink phrase.

Heidi Ellis's curator insight, May 21, 3:11 AM
Action and consistency key in online learning
Some really interesting thoughts in here. I can see how it might be tempting to simply drop students into an online environment and let them run loose, but it's important for them to know why they are doing this; and what's the learning outcome? Consistency would certainly help them to feel supported and more in control too. I feel that authentic context which delivers a learning outcome that is far beyond a simply alternative to a worksheet/text book is essential for online learning - just because it's on a computer/device doesn't instantly make it more engaging than a paper-based task!
