This tiny, wearable patch makes you invisible to mosquitos

This tiny, wearable patch makes you invisible to mosquitos | Funny, odd and interesting | Scoop.it
A mosquito can detect the carbon dioxide emanating from a prospective meal from hundreds of feet away. The Kite Patch, a small, non-toxic sticker that you place on your clothing, can jam a mosquito's CO2 radar.
Steven Mallach's insight:

This has the potential to revolutionise malaria prevention worldwide.

People are beginning to take crowd funding for granted, however pause and think about how democratising funding for projects like this is making a huge difference to the products that are destined for market.

Although the success rate for crowd funded products is low, the approach allows ordinary people to contribute to the success of products from concept to reality.

By looking at crowd funded projects we can get a good idea of trends around real market needs. Tracking these trends gves us a good idea of the the wants and needs of specific regional and global consumer groups and in itself that is valuable information.

NASA’s Rover Finds ‘Drinkable’ Water On Mars | Funny, odd and interesting | Scoop.it
NASA's Opportunity rover has analyzed a rock and determined that neutral water, suitable for drinking, once flowed through that rock in the very early days of Mars.
Steven Mallach's insight:

If you could get it back to Earth and bottle it imagine the retail price.

Of course to make this a viable business proposition we're talking retail of around $1000,000,000 per unit.

Potential Kickstarter idea?

Paleontologists brought to tears, laughter by Creation Museum

Paleontologists brought to tears, laughter by Creation Museum | Funny, odd and interesting | Scoop.it

For a group of paleontologists, a tour of the Creation Museum seemed like a great tongue-in-cheek way to cap off a serious conference.

But while there were a few laughs and some clowning for the camera, most left more offended than amused by the frightening way in which evolution -- and their life's work -- was attacked.

"It's sort of a monument to scientific illiteracy, isn't it?" said Jerry Lipps, professor of geology, paleontology and evolution at University of California, Berkeley.

Steven Mallach's insight:

For me, this would be better than Disneyland.

Belief in a divine power is great, it gets many people through difficult days, but wake up and smell the fossil record.

There is nothing more entertaining than people so completely, so utterly, so mind bendingly wrong and yet still so convinced that they have the answer.

Was reading about kids in Texas (if I'm not mistaken) who were fed this drivel as part of their curriculum, without parents signing off on the idea.

"If anyone says that dinosaurs were on Earth more than 4000 years ago what do you say to them?

"WERE YOU THERE?"

This was apprently a test question. "Were you there?" was the corect answer.

Singapore Is The Ultimate Beacon Of Economic Freedom

Singapore Is The Ultimate Beacon Of Economic Freedom | Funny, odd and interesting | Scoop.it
Now featuring running water and proper sewage.
Steven Mallach's insight:

Sounds great. I'm an expat living in Singapore and everything this article says is bang on the money.

As with every place in the world there's a flip side to this.

Sky high prices caused by incredible wealth and huge property investment (much of it flowing in from China) mean that the average Singaporean is rapidly becoming dissatisfied with the status quo.

The Singapore government is doing all that it can to improve the lot of Joe Public, but many believe that foreign talent should be doing more than just paying taxes. For expats Singapore may just be a stopover during their climb to the top of the corporate ladder so they see no need to become vested in the country.

This leads to a delicate dance between growth, infrastructure and local needs.

Friday Humor: Overcompensating In China | Zero Hedge | Funny, odd and interesting | Scoop.it
China may or may not be building empty cities any more, but when it comes to the buildings it does, ahem, erect, it appears that the communist regime is either running out of ideas or is taking the symbolism of the skyscraper ...

The Systems That Power the Year's Most Sustainable Buildings

The Systems That Power the Year's Most Sustainable Buildings | Funny, odd and interesting | Scoop.it

Only a decade ago, sustainable building techniques were fairly rare, a fringe culture on the periphery of mainstream architecture. But with Stephen Colbert interviewing radically green architects like Mitchell Joachim and Passive House buildingspopping up in New York City, that's all changing very quickly.

For concrete evidence of the shift, look no further than this year's Top Ten Green Buildings, an annual list chosen by the American Institute of Architects. A few years ago, this list was full of single-family homes commissioned by clients with a special interest in sustainability. Lately, it's full of schools, government buildings, and commercial developments.
