Compassionate Mind, Healthy Body

Compassionate Mind, Healthy Body | Thanks Attitude | Scoop.it

Decades of clinical research has explored the psychology of human suffering. Yet that suffering, as unpleasant as it is, often has a bright side: compassion.'

Human suffering often inspires beautiful acts of compassion by people wishing to help relieve that suffering. What led 26.5 percent of Americans to volunteer in 2012 (according to statistics from the US Department of Labor)? What propels someone to serve food at a homeless shelter, pull over on the highway in the rain to help someone with a broken down vehicle, or feed a stray cat?

How Imagination Shapes Your Reality

How Imagination Shapes Your Reality | Thanks Attitude | Scoop.it

Western thinkers have tended to draw a line between reality—that which we “actually” experience—and imagination, seen as a frivolous, dreamlike diversion. For millennia, though, spiritual contemplatives and artists have taken flights of fancy much more seriously and challenged the firmness of that line. And surprising recent advances in neuroscience, particularly in the field of brain scanning, have added support to their conviction that our imagination and sense of reality are closely intertwined. The human capacity for imagination not only shapes our minds but also weaves the fabric of reality itself.

Via Pamir Kiciman
Maria Teresa Frezet terapeuta olistica's insight:

Once we understand the great power we have to create our reality, then we start clearing up our thoughts and emotions because we definetly want to create a plesant life!!!!

Some suggestions? Let's start learning how we are and what we feel inside by observing the reactions that we arouse in other people...Let's understand that only through this sort of "mirror effect" we can actually get to know ourselves and change our world!

This is the main idea of Thanks Attitude. By accepting the theory of the mirror, the consequence is gratitude towards people and situations that are on our way to show us parts we wouldn't be able to see on our own.

Negative Emotions are Key to Well-Being

Negative Emotions are Key to Well-Being | Thanks Attitude | Scoop.it

Feeling sad, mad, critical or otherwise awful? Surprise: negative emotions are essential for mental health.

Anger and sadness are an important part of life, and new research shows that experiencing and accepting such emotions are vital to our mental health. Attempting to suppress thoughts can backfire and even diminish our sense of contentment.

Instead of backing away from negative emotions, accept them. Acknowledge how you are feeling without rushing to change your emotional state. Many people find it helpful to breathe slowly and deeply while learning to tolerate strong feelings or to imagine the feelings as floating clouds, as a reminder that they will pass. I often tell my clients that a thought is just a thought and a feeling just a feeling, nothing more.

The point is always the same... If we refuse something, this comes back even bigger! Whike if we accept we are made of different parts (emotions), without putting an excessive judgment on it, we will soon experience a real balance and a steady well-being!

The Compassionate Mind — Why it’s healthy and how it spreads

The Compassionate Mind — Why it’s healthy and how it spreads | Thanks Attitude | Scoop.it

The reason a compassionate lifestyle leads to greater psychological well-being may be explained by the fact that the act of giving appears to be as pleasurable, if not more so, as the act of receiving.

Another way in which a compassionate lifestyle may improve longevity is that it may serve as a buffer against stress.

Yet another reason compassion may boost our well-being is that it can help broaden our perspective beyond ourselves.

Finally, one additional way in which compassion may boost our well-being is by increasing a sense of connection to others.

Given the importance of compassion in our world today, and a growing body of evidence about the benefits of compassion for health and well-being, this field is bound to generate more interest and hopefully impact our community at large.

Very nice article (based on scientific reserch) about importance of gratitude. in addition to the mentioned excercises, I would also say:

- "use" other people like a mirror to understand who you are because when for instance you are angry with somebody, it's not the other person's fault but it is a way to feel what kind of emotions you have inside. if you accept to change perspective and start to say "which part of myself can I see through this person/situation?" Then you will rapidly evolve and you will have the key to give a different direction to Life!

Gratitude practice has changed my life. This is a great article on all of the ways it helps us become more resilient as it changes our perspective and our brains!

John Michel's curator insight, July 29, 2013 1:55 PM

Gratitude is the thankful appreciation of things received, whether tangible or intangible. It helps us connect with something outside ourselves, often transcendent and larger than ourselves. I have been practicing a gratitude exercise, and you can do it too. It's very simple. Each night I reflect on my day. I recall three things I'm grateful for and write them in a gratitude journal. The things I'm grateful for are those amazing moments, wonderful conversations with friends and family, or even just watching birds or squirrels going about their business. It might be a moment of beauty that is striking or uplifting.

Garth Sanginiti's curator insight, July 29, 2013 7:15 PM

"Being grateful for people and things in my life makes me more aware of my own good fortune, and it helps rewire my brain to be more optimistic. If you are feeling down, how blue can you feel if you have a fat journal of things you are grateful for? Writing my gratitude journal keeps me mindful and aware of what's great in my life. I've noticed clients who have practiced this exercise are happier, far less stressed and get through their day with less difficulty than they used to."

Maria Teresa Frezet terapeuta olistica's insight:

The Benefits of Optimism Are Real | Thanks Attitude | Scoop.it
Having a positive outlook is the most important predictor of resilience.

Via Luigi Frezza
Maria Teresa Frezet terapeuta olistica's insight:
