The Empathy Factory

We empower children to take action and make to the world a better place. Our leadership inspires and challenges youth to tap into their empathy and create social change. Children are often ‘accused’ of having unabashed optimism, but this is exactly what we try to promote. The Empathy Factory was founded on the belief that by instilling empathy in our youth, injustices will be stopped, communities transformed and hope inspired. http://empathyfactory.com

Maria Teresa Frezet terapeuta olistica's insight:

Compassionate Mind, Healthy Body | Thanks Attitude | Scoop.it

Decades of clinical research has explored the psychology of human suffering. Yet that suffering, as unpleasant as it is, often has a bright side: compassion.'

Human suffering often inspires beautiful acts of compassion by people wishing to help relieve that suffering. What led 26.5 percent of Americans to volunteer in 2012 (according to statistics from the US Department of Labor)? What propels someone to serve food at a homeless shelter, pull over on the highway in the rain to help someone with a broken down vehicle, or feed a stray cat?

Luana Gollin - www.psicologia-benessere.eu's curator insight, December 4, 2013 7:13 AM

5 Tools for raising compassionate, empathetic kids

5 Tools for raising compassionate, empathetic kids | Thanks Attitude | Scoop.it
Empathy, compassion and the resulting kindness they instill are key ingredients to a life of happiness. Find out how to raise children with these qualities.

Raising kids to be compassionate and to have empathy is possible.

The good news is that multiple studies say children as young as toddlers have innate feelings of compassion and empathy. Empathy is defined as the ability to imagine walking in the shoes of another. And compassion is the emotional response generated by the suffering of others and then wanting to act on it by helping.

Research also says the empathy, compassion and the resulting kindness they instill are key ingredients to a life of happiness. What we do as adults matters in raising children to further develop those innate responses. Here are five tools that we can each incorporate into our lives.

Gratitude practice has changed my life. This is a great article on all of the ways it helps us become more resilient as it changes our perspective and our brains!

John Michel's curator insight, July 29, 2013 1:55 PM

Gratitude is the thankful appreciation of things received, whether tangible or intangible. It helps us connect with something outside ourselves, often transcendent and larger than ourselves. I have been practicing a gratitude exercise, and you can do it too. It's very simple. Each night I reflect on my day. I recall three things I'm grateful for and write them in a gratitude journal. The things I'm grateful for are those amazing moments, wonderful conversations with friends and family, or even just watching birds or squirrels going about their business. It might be a moment of beauty that is striking or uplifting.

Garth Sanginiti's curator insight, July 29, 2013 7:15 PM

"Being grateful for people and things in my life makes me more aware of my own good fortune, and it helps rewire my brain to be more optimistic. If you are feeling down, how blue can you feel if you have a fat journal of things you are grateful for? Writing my gratitude journal keeps me mindful and aware of what's great in my life. I've noticed clients who have practiced this exercise are happier, far less stressed and get through their day with less difficulty than they used to."
