Lead Or Get The Hell Out of the Way: Long Tail of a New Leadership

Lead Or Get The Hell Out of the Way: Long Tail of a New Leadership | Personal Branding Using Scoopit | Scoop.it

I was glad to write about leadership when my friend and the CEO of Brand Fuel asked me to create a guest blog post for Promo Kitchen, his promotion industry blog.

I rarely have a chance to write about leadership though I think and read about it frequently. The new Internet economy requires a sizable leadership rethink and that "rethink" is what The Long Tail of Leadership is about.

Don't forget to share your ideas, comments and reactions.

Using Scoopit For Personal Branding and Online Reputation Management (ORM)

Using Scoopit For Personal Branding and Online Reputation Management (ORM) | Personal Branding Using Scoopit | Scoop.it

I've been a Scoopiteer since Marc and Guilluame were kind enough to let me drive their very cool new car. Like many Internet marketers I have more and more content generating less and less control.

The more content I add the more difficult it gets to keep up with. I've been wondering how to collect and watch my personal brand. Google Authorship has the promise of a collective personal "commons", but actually using authorship to help with such a practical application today feels remote.

Instead I've reorganized my Thank You feed for personal brand management. The mission is simple - create a single feed with the "best of" content from 5 blogs, 4 Twitter feeds, Google Plus, Storify, Facebook and Twitter.

Think of the numbers. I create or curate over 50 posts a day and typically write at least 1,000 words. Translation: almost 400,000 words and 20,000 posts to keep up with each year. And I am by no means a PRO at this. Imagine what Michele Smorgon or Robin Good are managing (many multiples of Martin W. Smith).

Scoop.it As Personal Branding ORM Solution
Scoopit can help. I changed all the sources to this feed (will rename it soon) to RSS feeds from the digital properties I contribute to regularly. I cleaned out ALL OTHER SOURCES.

1. Change "Sources" To Feeds From Your Content.

I also changed the keywords to my name or social media synonyms such as @ScentTrail and @StoryofCancer.  These changes set up Scoopit so it watches my back, helps this feed curate from across time and many digital properties and catches reactions and content evolution.

2. Change Keyords To Ones Relevant to You (your name, social names, etc.).

Hiring An Assistant & Sweeping Morgan Manhattan's Yard

Hiring An Assistant & Sweeping Morgan Manhattan's Yard | Personal Branding Using Scoopit | Scoop.it

Marty's Assistant: Now Hiring
I used Sweeps.jobs to find college students to help pack. I'm moving across Durham tomorrow. The experience got me thinking. Perhaps hiring an assistant is a good idea.

The linked G+ post shares details and where to apply. If you are interested in learning about the web #marketing and ecommerce apply to organize my life. I recognize the need for the kind of intelligent help who can be trusted to assume more and more. I also understand, within six months to a year, the "intern" I hire will need to fly the coop.

People who collaborate with me usually make 30% more in their next gig.
I'm not the reason for such a rising tide. The value of the #ecommerce  and#marketing  experiences I've been able to collect and am still creating is what makes a resume jump off the stack.

My "assistant" will be able to walk and talk
#seo , #contentmarketing , #socialmedia  and #startups  even if only partially listening.

Epic Personal Branding Now: Martin's Ride 5th Anniversary

Epic Personal Branding Now: Martin's Ride 5th Anniversary | Personal Branding Using Scoopit | Scoop.it
Suddenly it was time to leave.

For six months most of what I'd done every day was ride a bicycle in preparation for a 3,300 mile journey west to Santa Monica. I woke early, rode thirty to fifty miles on the Tobacco trail near my Durham, NC home and then catch a nap, have a big middle of the day post-ride meal, read, write some and go to bed. Rinse and Repeat. Rinse and repeat for six months.

I rode a thousand miles before thinking I was ready to ride 3,300 miles. And it wasn't enough, not nearly enough as the Blue Ridge Parkway proved. "Martin," my mother told me when we stopped in Tennessee to se her,"you could get get to the Mississippi and stop since that is a big body of water".

My mother was worried. But if we could make the mighty Mississippi we could make Santa Monica.

How Metabolism Magic & My Sister Saved Martin's Ride To Cure Cancer

How Metabolism Magic & My Sister Saved Martin's Ride To Cure Cancer | Personal Branding Using Scoopit | Scoop.it

MeMoSha Founder Explains Metabolism Magic
When I met my sister in Colorado during our 3,300 mile bicycle ride across America in the summer of 2020 I had no idea her tips about "fueling" and metabolism would save the day.

“Your shape is more end than means,” Caroline explained, “when you increase activity first without understanding how to modify your metabolism you are making the job of getting in shape harder.” Boy do I know the truth of my sister’s ideas.

Learn how Metabolism Movement & Shape's (MeMoSha) founder saved Martin's Ride & can help you get in shape too. Don't work on the wrong gear in the wrong way.

Did My Ancestors Meet The Wright Brothers? Maybe See 1903 Note

Did My Ancestors Meet The Wright Brothers? Maybe See 1903 Note | Personal Branding Using Scoopit | Scoop.it

Did My Ancestors Meet The Wright Brothers?
Turns out there is a better than good chance my great grandfather, Captain John Thomas Wescott may have known of or known Wilbur and Oriville Wright.

My great grandfather ran a "lifesaving station" on the North Carolina outer banks not far from Kill Devil Hills (where the Wright brothers flew for the first time).

I found an amazing 1903 note from my grandmother's sister Mary complaining about being so alone. This was two years before my grandmothers birth and the very year of the Wright Brothers first flight. The reason it is very possible is the outer banks then wasn't like they are now.

McCullough describes Kitty Hawk, NC as having 50 mostly down on their luck fisherman IN THE ENTIRE TOWN. Life was so hard, captured so beautifully by my grandmother's 12 year-old sister, few WANTED or could handle living there. Not so much now (lol), but kudos to McCullough's great book, the Wright Brothers for having the right stuff and Captain John Thomas Wescott and family for the courage to place their lives in service to others.

Too Good!

So even if Captain John T never met the Wright brothers he was still a pretty amazing man. Serendipity is strange. I live about a mile from Captain John's grave. Too strange :). M

Why It's So Difficult To Hire Great People

Why It's So Difficult To Hire Great People | Personal Branding Using Scoopit | Scoop.it
I believe I do some good work from time to time, but the one part of my job that I can't afford to not get right is the hiring part.I've been reading Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman on a recommendation from my friend and fellow neo-stoic-philosopher Jarrod Swart. The most interesting part of the book for me is the idea of substitution. Some questions are really hard, so our brains substitute an easier question that should approximate an answer that will be close enough. This happens with such cognitive ease, that we don't even recognize it. If you start paying close attention, you'll
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Great question asked by my friend and Curagami co-founder Phil Buckley. I shared a comment about being interviewed with behavioral techniques - possibly the most effective interview I ever experienced.

Interviews are two-way communications. My behavioral interview taught me a great deal about the company I would join and work for for 7 years too. In fact it was a company where I hired Phil, the post's author, to help.

3 Survival Stories From Martin's Ride To Cure Cancer on 5th Anniversary

3 Survival Stories From Martin's Ride To Cure Cancer on 5th Anniversary | Personal Branding Using Scoopit | Scoop.it

Martin’s Ride To Cure Cancer
Martin's Ride To Cure Cancer left the Duke Cancer Institute five years ago today. Little did we know what the next sixty days and 3,300 miles held for us.

On this fifth anniversary seemed like a good idea to share three survival stories from Martin's Ride:

* Storm on the Grand Staircase.

* Drowning in Lake Topaz.
* Falling into CA 395.

We lived to tell these tales with a new appreciation of life's value and thread-like clinging quality. We hope you and your loved ones never need experience any of this because we've cured cancer in our lifetime.

What about you? Do you have great survival stories? Share 'em and we will curate into the post. Thanks, Marty

Unboxing New MacBook
Knew I had to have the new paper thin, tiny and light MacBook the minute I saw it. I don't like typing on my phone. My 6+ is easier for "fat finger typing", but publishing and content curation tools are clunky (at best) non existent (at worst) so my laptop is my constant traveling companion.

Today I felt like Steve Martin running up and down shouting about the arrival of the new phone book. Nope, just my new Macbook and now the hard work - setting it up :). Marty

Magical Vice
Shame Smith's magical behind the scenes look at how we will cure cancer in our lifetime for Vice is inspirational, amazing and life affirming. Curing cancer is here and now and it involves wizard thinking, blinding new technologies and the kind of "out of the box" thinking that defines America and Americans (not to slight our creative neighbors to the north as Canadians are fully represented too).

Great show and inspirational for all but especially for cancer patients , their friends and families.
