Why Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz Is A Hero [video]

Why Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz Is A Hero [video] | Personal Branding Using Scoopit | Scoop.it
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Howard Schultz CEO, Hero
I thought of Starbucks CEO as a hero before watching this amazing Board of Trade interview about his new book Onward. Onward is about how Schultz got the right people in the right seats on the Starbucks bus turning the company around and changing the world.

Why was Schultz already a hero? I have cancer, leukemia, and during the dark days when I wasn't sure I could keep a job and so would lose my insurance the fact that Starbucks let its hourly employees have health insurance was my last line of defense.

Luckily I never had to use my last line of defense. Not "luckily" because I don't want to work for Starbucks (who knows on that front). I would walk across hot coals for Howard and I LOVE his company too. I love Starbucks for different reasons.

I love Starbucks because they are values based and walk their talk. When Schultz looks direclty at the camera in this snippet (taped with my iPhone off the TV) and says LOVE is one of the secrets to getting Starbucks back on track I want to hug the man.

I've been waxing philosophical about the need for marketing to SAVE THE WORLD (http://www.slideshare.net/martinmartysmith/save-the-world-marketing ) for about a year. Schultz is more powerful than me by an order of magnitude so his "use case" is dramatic support for something I believe in my TOES - Love is the Killer App and you must SAVE THE WORLD in some meaningful way to have any relevance now that the world is flat, connected and furiously fast :).

You can save the world only by way of vertical (real) thinking. The rest is an illusion:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYE31Ek7f3M&feature=youtu.be
Martin (Marty) Smith's comment, July 8, 2013 10:54 AM
Appreciate the comment Robert but I think some "magical thinking" is required when anyone (people, brands or companies) think about creating Save The World marketing. I don't judge as much as want to be amazed by those ideas, apps and approaches. Marty

Hero Marketing & Personal Branding Podcast Interview w/ Curagami Founder

Hero Marketing & Personal Branding Podcast Interview w/ Curagami Founder | Personal Branding Using Scoopit | Scoop.it
GetSocialHealth.com Janet Kennedy interviews Curagami Founder & cancer survivor Marty Smith on startups, crowdfunding, social media & curing cancer.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Hero Marketing
Little did I know when I quit my Director of Ecommerce position and decided to ride a bicycle across America to help cure cancer that I would discover "Hero Marketing". I thought there would be an epiphany somewhere in Utah as we rode 3,300 miles across America, but fell on the idea of Hero Marketing.

Hero Marketing is easy to understand. Do amazing things that require risk and you have a chance for reward. Do average things with little risk and you will discover a long line of people who are already there.

While this podcast interview doesn't discuss personal branding and Hero Marketing as much as it covers startups, crowdfunding and our most recent startups Tech Cures Cancer (live on UNC and blog coming soon) and Curagmai (content marketing tool for merchants and content marketers). Hero Marketing is the core of our conversation.
