Jacob Broadhead's insight:

I've been hearing a lot about Pecha Kucha lately and so I finally went out and watched a presentation about it. 20 seconds for each slide with automatic transition. I think this could be a great assignment in the ESL/EFL classroom.

Michael Griffin shows how to use corpus tools to articulate the differences in meaning and usage between the words 'problem' and 'trouble' for EFL/ESL learners.

He takes Firth as his starting point (see here for my take on this http://bit.ly/WeTGiB)

ESL English as a Second Language free materials for teaching and study

ESL English as a Second Language free materials for teaching and study | TESOL Language Learning | Scoop.it
ESL, English as a second language, teaching materials and resources for speaking, study and learning. TESOL teachers, schools, and programs.
Jacob Broadhead's insight:

Glen Penrod from Georgetown University and friends have created a great website with some remarkable resources. Unlike the backpacker-teaching resource sites, this site looks like it has some good quality and backed by some actual theory and not just a way to pass time in class. I saw a presentation from Glen Penrod at KOTESOL about verb pairs with status/action verbs and showing how teaching verb lexis with grammatical aspect/time is not only necessary but useful to help students understand verb meaning and grammar.

Whatdoestheinternetthink.net - What does the internet think?

Ever wondered what the internet thinks about.. let's say.. Barack Obama? The Financial Crisis? Global Warming? Now you can search and get the answers to your questions from this global inquiry tool!
Jacob Broadhead's insight:

Although this is not directly related to language learning, it could possibly give some insight into the connotations (or other aspects of semantics) of words at a given time. For example I looked up slender to see its connotation. I found that it was 65% positive. I think the meaning of this word is changing from positive to negative because of the creepy "slender man" that is scaring children everywhere. When compared to "thin", "slender" is less popular by a lot: 85% to only 14.5%. An interesting tool that has its limitations but might help build meaning with some of the words and show language change.

The new word list that replaces the original GSL. There are some great resources on this website including definitions of the words using other words from the NGSL so the definitions include words that the should already be known. Dr. Browne & associates have done a great job.
