Meet lexicographer Orin Hargraves, the cliché killer

Meet lexicographer Orin Hargraves, the cliché killer | terminology and translation | Scoop.it
Clichés, says CU Boulder lexicographer Orin Hargraves, are "the comfort food of speech." And that's not a good thing. So while writing his new book "It's Been Said Before," he aimed to become a cliché killer. He soon realized, though, that they're hard to eliminate."We all talk about very ordinary things all the time and because of that, we don't need extraordinary or creative language to talk about ordinary things," he says. "Clichés are ordinary language."Hargraves hopes his new book, which ranks clichés based on how commonly they're used (on a scale of 1-5), will make writers and speakers more thoughtful."My idea was to capture the clichés that are the worst offenders," he says.Hargraves on one of the most commonly used clichés:"I think today the most frequent one is probably 'going forward.' It's relatively new. People used to say 'in the future' or 'at a later date,' but now everything is 'going forward.'" Other clichés that ranked "5" (the most commonly used):"If you like," "to say the least," "know full well," "grind to a halt," "beg the question," "on the same page," "passionate about something," "on the front lines," "few and far between," "numerous occasions," "movers and shakers," "light at the end of the tunnel," "close proximity," "so to speak," and "I must admit."A cliché Hargraves likes:"It's probably on its ways to become overused, [but] 'The elephant in the room.' What I like about that is it's such a graphic image. There's hardly any room you can imagine being in in which there is also an elephant. And so it's an arresting image. It works so well that it becomes a victim of its own success."Where the word cliché comes from:"It comes from French and, actually, it's very appropriate for its origins. In the days of metal typesetting, a cliché was a phrase that occurred so often that typesetters kept all the metal in that phrase as a single piece because they knew they would have to use it again."

Commission to launch glossary of Pinoy meteorological terms

Commission to launch glossary of Pinoy meteorological terms | terminology and translation | Scoop.it
“MANILA, Philippines - The Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) will release a glossary of meteorological terms in Filipino to help the Filipino people better understand weather forecasts and instill disaster awareness among them.National Artist for Literature and KWF president Virgilio Almario said yesterday the KWF produced the glossary titled Patnubay sa Weder Forkast to simplify scientific terms used in the weather bulletins of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).The book will also be helpful to the media in having a “standard language” in weather forecasting, he added. The KWF decided to produce the book after Super Typhoon Yolanda devastated the Visayas and killed more than 6,000 on Nov. 8, 2013.Yolanda generated a huge storm surge, or abnormal rise of seawater above the predicted astronomical tides. But many people living in the coastal areas in the Visayas reportedly chose to stay in their homes despite the storm surge warnings of PAGASA because they did not know what a storm surge means. This resulted in more casualties.“Mayroon namang nag- broadcast. Ang problema ay hindi naintindihan yung broadcast ng tao (A weather forecast was broadcasted. The problem is that people did not understand it),” Almario said during the Kapihan forum at the Philippine Information Agency.“The glossary could help in disseminating information about the weather, so that ordinary people will know how they should prepare for every calamity, not only for typhoon and earthquake, and for them to have disaster awareness,” he added in Filipino.Benjamin Mendillo, chief of the KWF’s translation division, said around 5,000 copies of the book will be released in three months.Copies of the book will only be available at the KWF office and PAGASA. KWF will sell the book at P64. PAGASA is yet to decide if the agency will sell the books or distribute these for free.”
