Workshop TOTh

Workshop TOTh | terminology and translation | Scoop.it
“ The 2015 TOTh Workshop is organised by DG TRAD – TermCoord European Parliament Place de l'Europe, Plateau de Kirchberg, 2929 Luxembourg In a globalised society, where objects multiply, specialise and connect (Linked and Open Data), Terminology plays a key role in accessing and managing information: we cannot communicate and share that information unless we agree on the terms being used. The changes regarding information and language processing demanded by this evolution of society have consequences for Terminology itself and for the standards that govern it. The current revisions of the ISO standards on Terminology, its vocabulary (ISO 1087-1) and its principles and methods (ISO 704) also reflect this. The 2015 TOTh Workshop aims to focus on Terminology and its standards in the changing context of our information society. Some of the topics to be addressed include (this is a non-exhaustive list): Standards for Terminology and on Terminology : The ISO international standards from TC 37 ; The standards concerning the principles and methods, terminography and lexicography, terminology, knowledge and content management systems, management of language resources, translation and interpretation; W3C standards. Applications that mobilise a terminological approach within: Translation; Information and knowledge processing and management; Language processing and language resources; The role of Terminology in the drafting of standards. The terminology commissions. Soumissions Submission: Abstracts (2-3 pages, including bibliography) should be sent to: workshop-toth@porphyre.org Deadline for submission: 15 October 2015 Notification of acceptance: 1 November 2015 Official languages : French and English Organising Committee R. (MULTI) - IATE Term of the Week: corralito | TermCoord

(MULTI) - IATE Term of the Week: corralito | TermCoord | terminology and translation | Scoop.it

"“Corralito” is a Spanish word used for the economic measures taken in 2001 in Argentina, when the government limited cash withdrawals from banks in a desperate battle to stop a run on banks and a huge devaluation.

The word “corralito” is the diminutive of “corral” which means “pen, playpen, animal pen” and is used with the meaning of “confining” or “small enclosure” due to the constraints imposed by the government by not allowing getting money from the banks. Given the fact that this extraordinary situation was well known all over the world, since that moment the term came to mean the corralling or ..."

Why join a professional association for translators and interpreters?

Why join a professional association for translators and interpreters? | terminology and translation | Scoop.it

interpreter's curator insight, June 28, 1:40 PM

Joining a professional association is a significant career step. It’s a way of saying to yourself and others that you’re serious about what you do, your work is valuable and you’re a skilled professional. Different associations for translators and interpreters have different entrance requirements, and some have multiple membership categories to take career progression into account. As well as increased professionalism, translation associations offer lots of benefits for members, including:

Directory listings (a big draw card!) – many associations (e.g. ATA, ITI, IAPTI, BDÜ) have directories of their members, which clients can use to find a translator or interpreter.Certification – some associations (e.g. ATA, ITI) offer assessments and certification programmes, which can provide useful credentials.Networking – joining an association can be a great way to get in touch with local, national or international colleagues.Professional development – you may be able to attend the association conference or other events, training sessions and webinars.Resources – many associations have a members-only section on their website that includes copies of their journal, as well as tools, resources and discounts for members.Code of ethics – most associations have a code of ethics that can give guidance to members in tricky situations.Promoting the interests of translators and interpreters – associations support the interests of their members, which is another good reason to join. Some represent translators and interpreters only, while others also have translation agencies as corporate members.
