[An American in Avcılar] Thank you, Mrs. Peters

[An American in Avcılar] Thank you, Mrs. Peters | Tennessee Libraries | Scoop.it

My earliest library memory is the bookmobile. I lived with my parents on a small North Carolina farm. We were more than two kilometers, much too far for a 6-year-old to walk, from our nearest neighbors...

I noticed the sign in front of a small brick building that sat off to one side of the school: “Public Library” it modestly announced. But I had never seen any school kids enter the double white doors so did not know if young people were allowed. The word “library,” however, evoked memories of delight from the bookmobile, and one day I shyly pushed open the heavy doors.

Of course I have to find the other article and isn't it sweet!

Ina Hughs: Two new books offer peek behind the Klan's sheets | Tennessee Libraries | Scoop.it
Had I not found them in The New York Times Book Review, I'd have missed two new books about the "not-so-invisible" empire that left an ugly scar in the history of the South. Namely, the Ku Klux Klan.

Kevin Boyle takes both books on in a review that sent me straight to the library and bookstore to hunt them down: "One Hundred Percent American" by Thomas Pegram and "Gospel According to the Klan" by Kelly Baker are fascinating and informative reads.

EV charge stations a bit slow to catch on

EV charge stations a bit slow to catch on | Tennessee Libraries | Scoop.it

NASHVILLE — Charging stations installed with a share of taxpayers' money are twice as plentiful across Tennessee today as the number of electric cars they're designed to refuel, and most of the units go unused for hours or days at a time.

Other companies have been installing a few, as well, including two Level 2 chargers at the Goodlettsville Branch Library that take anywhere from three to seven hours to recharge a vehicle.

[An American in Avcılar] The world of books

[An American in Avcılar] The world of books | Tennessee Libraries | Scoop.it

For as long as I can remember, I have had a passion for reading. Among my earliest memories, I can see my mother gently holding a book of fairy tales...

I have written in an earlier column about the bookmobile that visited our farmhouse and about Mrs. Peters who welcomed me to the riches of the Clinton Public Library. Rural and small town libraries are wonders, indeed, but I soon found that I had read through their holdings. By middle school, I was reading four or five books a week and had mined the libraries available to me.
