Career Coach Bus Visits Blount County Public Library to assist job seekers

Career Coach Bus Visits Blount County Public Library to assist job seekers | Tennessee Libraries | Scoop.it

The Career Coach bus continues a schedule of regular visits to Blount County so that staff members can assist job seekers, one-on-one, with online job searches, job lists from across the state, online job applications, updating or creating résumés and interview skills.

Professional staff will be available to offer individual career assistance for people seeking jobs. They will visit Blount County Public Library twice in February: Sat., Feb. 18 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Wed., Feb. 22 (10am to 7 p.m.). The black bus parks in the library parking lot.
The Career Coach will also visit the library on these dates:
Sat., March 17 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.);
Tuesday, March 20 (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.);
Sat., April 14 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.);
Tues., April 17 (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.);
Sat., May 5 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.);
Thurs., May 17 (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.).

The Career Coach is a mobile job resource center which travels to multiple locations, from county to county, to assist people who are looking for jobs. The 35-foot bus has a staff of 3-5 people and six Internet computers so that job seekers can benefit from online job searches, online job applications, job lists, interview assistance and résumé creation or updating.

The Career Coach, a project of the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development, is a valuable added dimension to services that will be welcome news to Tennesseans who do not have a Career Center in proximity to their homes or places of employment. Beginning in April, three new mobile units continue to serve as Career Centers on wheels.

Coaches will help jobseekers. “The mobile units serve multiple purposes,” said Lynn Gibbs, coordinator for the Middle Tennessee coach. “Job applicants can register for work and search available openings online.”

The Career Coach has computers, copiers, printers and fax machines that people can use free. Staff on board can help create a resumé, search for jobs online, give you the tools you need to find a job right away.

Africa: Human Encounters at the Blount County Public Library on Monday, March 5

During her studies in International Legal Studies, Jessica Mason worked a five-month internship, based in South Africa and also covered stories in Niger and Swaziland. She developed a passion for giving voice to those most often silenced by society, culture or government. During her travels, Mason’s experiences reinforced a conviction that people, for all their differences, are all people, sharing common dreams, hopes and concerns. This conviction has meshed with a passion for justice for oppressed and outcast peoples.

She says, “Walking the streets of Pretoria with trafficking victims, documenting a settlement empty of young adults due to AIDS/HIV, and facing the poverty of Third World regions gave faces to classroom lessons on human rights law and abuse.”

Mason will give a presentation, “African: Human Encounters” at the Blount County Public Library on Monday, March 5, at 7 p.m.

Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.
