"...The Elizabethton-Carter County Public Library spent most of the summer without air conditioning. The cooling tower in the system quit working after it was struck by lightening in April. After the project was put out to bid it was expected to take 90 days for the part to be manufactured and installed, which meant it would arrive in September. Temperatures inside the library averaged from the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s and many patrons and employees got sick from the heat. Many library activities were moved outside and the hours were altered to be closed in the middle of the day until the unit was repaired.
The library also received a donation of more than 14,000 children’s books, valued at more than $20,000, from professor Flora Joy. The books were donated from Joy’s personal collection she had gathered as a professor in the education department..."
The Robertson County Commission approved the funding of $1 million for the expansion of the Gorham-MacBane Public Library on Dec. 19, under the condition that the city of Springfield also pays $1 million to fund the joint project.
