"The Tennessee Department of State and the Tennessee State Library and Archives are pleased to announce the selection of a new regional library director for the Obion River Regional Library, located in Martin, Tennessee.

 

Mary Vaughan Carpenter will begin her new duties as Regional Director on September 4, 2012. Mary is currently the Library Director for the Paul Meek Library at the University of Tennessee, Martin. Prior to that, she was Director at the Obion County Public Library in Union City, Tennessee. Mary also brings experience in Children’s Literature, reference services, library construction, grantwriting, and working with school libraries to her new role as Regional Director.

 

Mary Carpenter is a familiar face to many library arenas across the state since she has actively participated in the Tennessee Advisory Council on Libraries, the Friends of the Tennessee State Library and Archives, Tenn-Share, and the Tennessee Library Association.

 

The Obion River Regional Library, formerly the Reelfoot Regional Library, has a proud history of serving the public libraries and communities in upper northwest Tennessee. Retired regional library directors Melba Wash and Susan Rogers Blakely provided leadership and guidance to the library directors, library trustees, and local government officials for many years. Please join us in welcoming new Obion River Regional Library Director Mary Carpenter to the fold of regional library service."

The Y-12 History Center was such a huge success that a decision was made to renovate the space and put up permanent walls, install a video viewing area and a research library as well as to convert the luncheon area to a highly professional media center for emergency response use as well as a small conference facility that is equipped for proper sound and visuals. Professor Mitchell Korn of Vanderbilt University is leading this free all-day workshop on effective strategies for teaching early childhood literacy with picture books and music. Mitchell Korn has served as an advisor for noted children’s author Eric Carle and his museum, had lectured at Harvard and Yale, and is a leading clinician in integrated arts and literacy learning.

 

The free workshop “Make it Fun with Music” will give public librarians practical skills to incorporate a variety of learning styles into their programs. Mitchell is dedicated to engagement and group participation. If you come to this workshop, you will walk away with skills and ideas to apply in your library the next day.

 

There will be crafts. 
A list of supplies you need to bring will be provided with confirmation. 
Lunch will be provided.

 

Another workshop will be offered on Sept 21 at Blount County Public Library.
