How Information Flows During Emergencies | MIT Technology Review

How Information Flows During Emergencies | MIT Technology Review | ten Hagen on Social Media | Scoop.it
Mining the mobile phone data from 10 million people over 4 years reveals the subtle changes that occur in the flow of information when disaster strikes, say network scientists.
Laurens ten Hagen's insight:

Liang Gao at Beijing Jiaotong University in China and a few friends say mobile phone records provide the same kind of lens for studying how humans fare in these extreme conditions. In particular, they say these records show that patterns of communication, and hence the way in which information flows, change in subtle but important ways during emergencies.

The data that Liang and co study consists of the metadata associated with voice calls and texts of 10 million people over 4 years in an unidentified European country. The metadata includes the caller and receiver, a timestamp and the location of the tower that routed the call.

Google neemt Nest over voor 2,3 miljard euro - IT Pro - Nieuws - Tweakers | ten Hagen on Social Media | Scoop.it
Laurens ten Hagen's insight:

Meet bitcoin, 2013's biggest winner

Meet bitcoin, 2013's biggest winner | ten Hagen on Social Media | Scoop.it
Adding 6200 percent, bitcoin was the biggest economic winner of 2013. However, a lot remains unclear about how the virtual currency works and is created. RT spoke to Robin Tiegland from the Stockholm School of Economics to shed a little light.
Laurens ten Hagen's insight:

On the one side, bitcoin is good because you can see all the transactions ever made with bitcoin online. And if the government tries to close down bitcoin or regulate it too hard, another currency will take its place, another form, probably less transparent. So you might drive things underground. So, I think, that governments will instead see what they can do in terms of tracking, in terms of legitimizing perhaps, some forms of softening regulations but not regulating it from the perspective of stopping it. Regulating from the perspective of making taxes on it, paying capital gains, but not being regulated by other financial instruments.

Vergroot een buigbaar scherm echt de kijkervaring?
Laurens ten Hagen's insight:
