CBP dreigt met dwangsom tegen WhatsApp om privacyschending | ten Hagen on Social Media | Scoop.it
Laurens ten Hagen's insight:

Facebook Engagement Drops: Effect on Nonprofits | Social Media Today

Facebook Engagement Drops: Effect on Nonprofits | Social Media Today | ten Hagen on Social Media | Scoop.it
Organic reach is dropping on Facebook. But are promoted posts and paid advertising also ineffective?
Laurens ten Hagen's insight:

2014 has been off to a good start for Facebook so far. Last week, it was announced that founder Mark Zuckerberg was the top philanthropist in 2013, having donated almost $1 billion. Their fourth-quarter earnings beat expectations, with revenue increasing from $1.59 billion to $2.59 billion. They even shook off a Princeton study that estimated usage would drop by 80% by 2017.

However, users (specifically brand marketers) are becoming increasingly vocal about the frustration they’re experiencing. Report after report shows that organic post visibility is dropping precipitously, forcing marketers to invest in paid advertisements and promoted posts. This is problematic for nonprofits and associations, whose budgets are already tight.

Now it seems that even those promoted posts may not be reaching the intended audience. A post from video blogger Derek Muller of Veritasium is making the rounds on social media with a damning study on Facebook’s advertising model. It’s well worth the 9 minute playtime:

Tracking the Growth of Social Media [#Infographic]

Tracking the Growth of Social Media [#Infographic] | ten Hagen on Social Media | Scoop.it
In the past five years social media has grown exponentially. Though both Facebook and Google+ have more than a billion registered users, Twitter beats out both networks in terms of growth, with a 44% increase in its user base from 2012 to 2013.
Laurens ten Hagen's insight:

Google+'s high numbers come in part from Google integrating one login across multiple services, including Google+ and Gmail. This approach may impact growth numbers even more in the future. Take the new YouTube comments powered by Google+ for example. While YouTube is not featured as a social network in this infographic, its usage numbers are noteworthy; the site states that it sees 1 billion unique visitors each month. It remains to be seen if and how Google+ comments on YouTube will influence the usage stats of Google+.
