The Dark Side of High Employee Engagement

The Dark Side of High Employee Engagement | temporary | Scoop.it

We need to take a more balanced view of employee engagement. Managers need to think about how to create just enough tension in their workforce in order to trigger healthy competition and intrinsic motivation. A “one size fits all” approach to employee engagement is unrealistic, and the common understanding of engagement as “happiness” is too simplistic.

While engagement is an important determinant of performance, performance is also affected by other factors – and sometimes those factors matter more than engagement. For example, a recent study by Google found that the critical drivers of effective team performance were an open and safe team culture, clear goals, and a strong sense of purpose. Likewise, scientific studies show that leaders’ judgment and decision making ability can affect team and organizational performance beyond engagement. This explains why certain leaders – think Steve Jobs or Jeff Bezos – can be so effective despite not displaying great people-skills or emotional intelligence: you can get away with it if you also have great judgment and vision.

But how can business leaders make meaning of a playing field that is constantly changing shape?

Is it possible to create the future without having an updated navigation system to live, learn and lead in a digital age?

According to Steve Lucas, SAP’s president of platform solutions, service pack 10 is one of the biggest-ever updates to the platform since it was launched in 2010.

Main changes:
1. A new remote data-synchronization feature that allows organizations to synchronize data between remote locations and the enterprise;
2. A new Web-based development workbench to help enterprises cleanse data and manage duplicates (this could dramatically reduce the size of data centres);
3. Expanded data-integration capabilities that include support for the latest Cloudera Inc., Hortonworks Inc. and MapR Technologies Inc. Hadoop distributions.

Metanoia: Diet for a Drugged Planet » If a plant told you to jump off a cliff … would you? | temporary | Scoop.it
“I too struggled with my ayahuasca visions. I had one particularly long messianic journey whereby I was the “one” who could see the entire evolutionary script, past and future, and thus it was my responsibility to save humanity. I was interpreting my visions through some syncretic mixture of millenarianist apocalypse and Judeo-Christian non-sense spurned on by Jose Arguelles’s interpretations of the Mayan calendar conjunct Terence McKenna’s Time Wave Zero. If they would only listen to me …I had failed to distinguish my imagination from reality. It took several months for me to separate what happened from what I made up about it, to see my cultural conditioning with its viral memes giving meaning to my visions and thus to me. But having experienced ego transcendence, where my niggling worries dropped away, a sense of bliss and energy flow enveloped me in a unio-mystical type experience. I equated the horrible ruthless love I felt with an unfathomable intelligence permeating all. As I picked up the pieces of my sacred tantraum, I stumbled back into a mortal body with discrete limitations: no-one was listening me as the savior my visions said I was. I had experienced an entheogenesis but the unfathomable intelligence had lied, I was not the all-powerful savior of the world, I had not become God!”

Marc Emery: In Canada, cannabis regulation is the new prohibition - Encod.org | temporary | Scoop.it

Make no mistake, every elected Liberal member of Parliament, including cabinet ministers, is on record supporting legalization. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau directed his Minister of Justice in a public mandate to implement this goal by the end of his first term. “Legalization” is going happen, and Canada appears to be the first democracy in the world where a government was elected campaigning on a promise to legalize marijuana and is going to follow through.

But if legalization is the inevitable and unanimous policy of the governing body, why is it illegal now?

Historians of medicine and drugs have long held a view that psychoactive substances conform to cyclical patterns involving intense periods of enthusiasm, therapeutic optimism, critical appraisals, and finally limited use.
