A total of 22 universities participated in the study, and 3,000 Listening and 3,300 Reading Proficiency Tests were administered. Approximately 50% were Spanish, 25% were French, and 10% were German tests. The remaining 15% consisted of Russian, Italian, Japanese, and Portuguese.

One of the most encouraging findings was the fact that graduating seniors were, on average, advanced in reading in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and German. The study, therefore, provides evidence that professional (advanced) competences are commonly acquired in reading, even as early as the third year, in the most commonly taught languages. For a profession that has gotten used to accepting the fact that in speaking, intermediate mid seems to be the threshold that is all but impossible to get beyond without a significant period abroad, this is good news indeed.


Listening proficiency, however, seems to be a different matter. For languages like Spanish and German, and even Russian, the mean difference in proficiency level is one sublevel lower than for reading. The mean in Spanish, for example, is intermediate low in reading and novice high in listening at the end of the second-year sequence. For languages like French and Portuguese, languages where the spoken language is very different from the written one, the difference is even larger, i.e., close to two sublevels.

This is quite an extensive bank of listening sites.  Some are familiar (Ted Talks, ELLLO, NPR's Story Corps and VOA) but there are many others that include stories, news and interviews from around the world, and academic lectures. Several of the sites are specifically for English language learners.  This impressive library of listening material should be on every ESL/EFL teacher's favorites.

Into the mind of the listener the challenge of listening to a foreign language For long, the term ‘compréhension à l’audition’ has encouraged language teachers and testers to focus on the product of listening in the form of answers to questions, instead of trying to identify the processes that make up the skill. The result can be seen in methods that check understanding but do nothing to train learners to listen better. Many of these methods require learners to perform in ways that have very little connection with real-world listening. They also encourage false assumptions about the parallels between listening and reading. This talk draws upon psycholinguistic research to present a profile of what competent listening entails, whether in a first or a foreign language. The model provides a framework for a much deeper understanding of the problems encountered by language learners. It provides a basis for remedial exercise types that can address those problems. It also enables us to make more informed choices when designing tests of listening – choices relating to the recorded material, to the test method and to the questions asked – and to compare the behaviour elicited by a test with the demands that the listener faces in real life.
