Eight Alternatives to Google Image Search

Eight Alternatives to Google Image Search | TELT | Scoop.it
Last fall I published a chart comparing alternatives to using Google Image search. This evening I updated that chart to reflect a couple of changes to those tools and to add a new one to it.
Shona Whyte's insight:

Why not? I'm a fan of Morguefile.com - and after years of happily (=legally) grabbing pictures without attribution, began uploading some of my own pictures to the site this summer.

Not google image search. This was the result of a neural network Google built in order to recognize patterns in images. Feed it enough photos of cats, for example, and it would eventually be able to identify cats in pictures it hasn't seen before. Then they took this neural network and fed it random images, such as clouds, or even just static white noise, and told it to find certain things in the images. The program starts by taking anything that remotely looks like a shape it recognizes in the static, and accentuates the features it recognizes. Then it loops on itself, and is fed this accentuated image. http://www.trainingintambaram.in/web-designing-training-in-chennai.html

Shona Whyte's insight:

Nice presentation about using digital images. Don't be put off by the technical part at the beginning (vector versus bitmap) which seems to need some oral explanation.  Hang on for tips on searching and crediting, and especially the recommended sites at the end.

Materials writing: Katherine Bilsborough (via Adi Rajan) | TELT | Scoop.it

This talk was by Katherine Bilsborough and she started off by stating that while the downloading of illegally shared materials is a problem, there’s also a dire need for good quality materials because a lot of the stuff on the net is terribly dodgy. Additionally, there’s tremendous interest in materials writing because in a sense it is a form of professional development and requires Ts to bring together and apply a range of skills

Materials writing now has special interest status at IATEFL http://mawsig.iatefl.org/

A Straightforward Guide To Creative Commons | Edudemic | TELT | Scoop.it
Way back when, research meant going to the library, finding something in a book, and indicating what book you found the information in when you created your bibliography. The internet has brought a significant amount of grey area to the world of citations and bibliographies. Students need to understand how to distinguish relevant, reliable material …

Add Audioboo Recordings to Thinglink Images | TELT | Scoop.it

Richard Byrne of Free Tech for Teachers says:

"Audioboo and Thinglink are two services that I've introduced a lot of teachers to over the last couple years.  If you're unfamiliar with these two tools, Audioboo is a service for creating short audio messages and Thinglink is a tool for creating interactive images. You can now use the two services together. After recording an Audioboo message you can now insert it into a Thinglink image."

Helping Students Search for Creative Commons Licensed Images: Richard Byrne

Helping Students Search for Creative Commons Licensed Images: Richard Byrne | TELT | Scoop.it

Whenever students start searching on the web for pictures to use in their slideshows, videos, or infographics I have them search first for public domain and Creative Commonslicensed images. Using public domain images and Creative Commons licensed images (with proper attribution) ensures that students don't accidentally infringe on someone's copyright rights. In the video below I demonstrate three ways for students to search for Creative Commons licensed images.

Shona Whyte's insight:

Useful advice for a perennial problem.

Copyright, Creative Commons & Mix & Mash: Lesson Plan

Copyright, Creative Commons & Mix & Mash: Lesson Plan | TELT | Scoop.it
Objectives

Students understand how to legally adapt and reuse Creative Commons and public domain material. This means that students:

understand what copyright is;understand the range of Creative Commons licences;can choose and apply a creative commons licence for their own work;find content that can be reused and remixed;learn how to correctly attribute remixed works; and, understand plagiarism.

Work produced here may be entered in Mix & Mash 2013: The New Storytelling.

Shona Whyte's insight:

Information and activities for teaching about Creative Commons licences.  Some is directly related to New Zealand legislation, but most is relevant and useful for all of us.

Comment créditer les images ? | Thot Cursus | TELT | Scoop.it

| TELT | Scoop.it
