Time, work, science, Twitter: AILA talk by Greg Myers

Time, work, science, Twitter: AILA talk by Greg Myers | TELT | Scoop.it

Here are the references for the talk I am doing today at AILA in Brisbane: "Time and work on science Twitter."  Greg Myers

Shona Whyte's insight:

I'm having a little trouble parsing Myers' title, but some of the references to work on social media for science look worth chasing up.

#ELT chat: how to participate

#ELT chat: how to participate | TELT | Scoop.it

What is #ELTChat?
#ELTchat started in September 2010 when a group of #ELTchat professionals began to use twitter to discuss topics of interest to English Language Teachers. It began with the aim of creating a freely available social network for ELT professionals offering mutual support and opportunities for Continuous Professional Development.

Now, every Wednesday at 12pm and 21.00pm, ELT teachers from all over the world log into their Twitter account and for one hour hold an online discussion on a topic they have selected.

Shona Whyte's insight:

Good place to start to develop your own personal learning network for English language teaching.

#worldcall2013 Twitter feed

Shona Whyte's insight:

I couldn't find a free tool to back up more than the past week's worth of the twitter feed from the WorldCALL 2013 conference in Glasgow earlier this month.  So this is just a copy and paste without live links, but it gives some idea of what went on, who talked about what, and the very keen can always copy the URLs into a new tab ...

How to do Chirpstory: Jo Brodie | TELT | Scoop.it

I use Chirpstory to collect hundreds of tweets relatively quickly. [I]t lets you collect tweets in pages rather than individually. Here's how I do it.

Shona Whyte's insight:

I just started using this in the usual way and for the usual reasons - spotted someone using it (#eltchat), then saw how it would be helpful for something I'm already doing (PLNs for pre-service teachers).  Luckily someone has posted this nice walk-through.

Shona Whyte's insight:

Much of the discussion would be relevant to non-language teaching contexts.  Interesting for my work with pre-service EFL teachers at a French university.  #eltchat is probably a good place for them to begin developing a PLN.

The language of Twitter: the rise of MFL teachers online

The language of Twitter: the rise of MFL teachers online | TELT | Scoop.it

The MFL Twitterati is a dynamic grassroots group of language teachers, consultants and associations who love to share ideas, resources, useful links and a bit of banter with each other on a daily basis over Twitter. In addition to the beautiful blend of useful and supportive tweets, both personal and professional, the indefatigable group also regularly take part in MFL Flashmeetings, recorded video conferencing sessions where we discuss the latest developments in language teaching then post the recording for all to dip into. Check out the latest one where we look ahead to the challenges (and solutions) of 2013.

There is also The MFL Times generated automatically from the links in the tweets of those who follow the account MFLTimes. Each edition of the e-magazine, available via subscription or through the archives, includes language-related stories, videos, images and links all in the one place. It's also available to non-Twitter users, and acts as a great pull for new members of the community.

The latest initiative is to use the cloud storage service Dropbox to create shared folders (organised by language) which any of its invited users can upload to. This collaborative internet memory stick allows us to share resources conveniently and quickly, a real inspiration and time saver for busy teachers.

Shona Whyte's insight:

Joe Dale shows how language teachers can use technology to connect, share and develop.

Elle part avec son panier où elle a mis des raisins, une pomme et un thermos rempli de savoureux chocolat chaud.

NDgrazer's curator insight, January 9, 2013 1:18 AM

Silvia Rosenthal Tolisano has an interesting and highly visual post on collecting vs. curating with Twitter, and on the curation potential Twitter has in store for those involved in education.

She quotes Mike Fisher writing: "Collecting is what kids do when asked to find resources for a particular topic. Usually, it represents the first 3 or 4 hits on a Google search, without meaning, discernment, or connections.

Curating is different. It’s the Critical Thinker’s collection, and involves several nuances (see Figure 1) that separate it as an independent and classroom-worthy task."

Useful. Resourceful. 7/10
