Masters in Teaching English: research project topics

Masters in Teaching English: research project topics | TELT | Scoop.it
This week our second-year Masters students in the English teaching programme at the University of Nice presented their end-of-year classroom research projects to an audience of university and secondary school teachers and their peers. We heard thirty presentations on different dimensions of teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in French secondary schools, which include both lower secondary (collège, 11-15 years) and upper secondary (lycée, 16-18 years). The students are pre-service teachers; the majority have passed national competitive teacher entrance exams and have taught part-time through this school year, with support from mentor teachers and university tutors. Some have yet to pass the exams and had shorter school placements under the direct supervision of a school tutor.

Textbook Survey

Textbook Survey | TELT | Scoop.it
We are working on a classroom research project on how pupils learn English in French secondary schools. We are interested in what materials teachers use, how they teach, and how the pupils learn. For our first step, we are just looking for information on which textbooks teachers are using to teach English in French collèges and lycées.

If you are currently teaching English in a secondary school in France, we would like you to answer the following questions. We think our survey will take around 5 minutes and we would be very grateful for your input.

Excellence in higher education teaching

Excellence in higher education teaching | TELT | Scoop.it
Laure Endrizzi:
As a result of the massification of higher education and the increasing competitiveness in European and global higher education, many questions surrounding teaching and research quality have emerged in recent years. The primacy of research over teaching is increasingly debated. The higher education profession has changed significantly, with the emergence of a more explicit teaching role in universities and the development of more diverse and more active teaching methods, although work in this area remains largely uncoordinated, particularly in the social and human sciences. Though still limited in scope, original initiatives are beginning to emerge to promote the teaching component of higher education. Today, teaching excellence tends to be the main focus of attention, reigniting debates over higher education academics’ training and support.

Shona Whyte's insight:

An EFL teacher's reaction to an inspection of a lesson in his French high school.  Refreshingly open, entertainingly attuned to the absurdities of The System, and puts the finger on a number of specific points language teacher education needs to address.
