Learning with digital technologies: US 0ffice of Ed Tech 2016

Technology can be a powerful tool for transforming learning. It can help affirm and advance relationships between educators and students, reinvent our approaches to learning and collaboration, shrink long-standing equity and accessibility gaps, and adapt learning experiences to meet the needs of all learners.

Our schools, community colleges, and universities should be incubators of exploration and invention. Educators should be collaborators in learning, seeking new knowledge and constantly acquiring new skills alongside their students. Education leaders should set a vision for creatinglearning experiences that provide the right tools and supports for all learners to thrive. However, to realize fully the benefits of technology in our education system and provideauthentic learning experiences, educators need to use technology effectively in their practice.

Furthermore, education stakeholders should commit to working together to use technology to improve American education. These stakeholders include leaders; teachers, faculty, and other educators; researchers; policymakers; funders; technology developers; community members and organizations; and learners and their families

Thinking Together ProjectA dialogue-based approach to the development of children's thinking and learning.Spoken Language

Spoken language enables us to do much more than share information - it enables us to think together. But as teachers, do we always use it to best advantage? And do we give enough attention to enabling children to use language as a tool for learning and problem-solving?

On this website we explain how years of practical, classroom-based research in several countries and with learners of all ages has provided useful answers to these questions.

We also provide some downloadable material for researchers and teachers, with links to useful books, research projects and other websites.

Should we 'flip' our classrooms?

Should we 'flip' our classrooms? | TELT | Scoop.it

Perhaps, instead [of explicit classroom instruction], I should video myself explaining new concepts in a stilted fashion, unsure as to whether my explanation has been understood or whether repetition is necessary. I could then ask students to watch this video at home, surrounded by the distractions of their bedrooms and then the lesson time would be freed-up for me to try my best to undo the misconceptions that have developed whilst somehow dealing with those students who didn’t actually watch the video. This is flipped learning.

"Flipping the classroom" is a complete misnomer and an indictment of what appears to be happening in a majority of classrooms. Truly flipping the classroom is to invite a student to be the teacher. There is no better way to master a topic than to have to teach it. Like Shona I yearn for this misappropriated populist term to fade into oblivion. Time to rediscover the Socratic dialogue rather than use a band-aid.

From its opening, theICTLT Conferenceset the stage for discussions of ICTs in education by integrating the work of Singa-porean students – which ranged from creating robots to creating animations – into the conference proceedings. Key themes which emerged over a range of plenaries, spotlight sessions and concurrent papers included the need for a shift of mindset to develop educational approaches relevant to students and their future in a rapidly changing economy and society; the need to focus less on standardised tests and to encourage creativity and entrepreneurship; and, of course, by the need for educators and educational leaders to become, and remain, learners, in order for this to be achieved.

Re-envisioning Modern Pedagogy: Educators as Curators

Two professors of communication tackle the interface between curating and teaching.  Of course this is easier if you're teaching communication, since the medium is the message.

For my concerns - teaching foreign languages and training FL teachers - it's clear that there are links between what I curate and what and how I teach: I put things on this Scoop.it for later use in class, and share my students' findings on here too.  And setting the students loose in social media helps them understand the field and become more independent professionals.

But I still fear that in the headlong rush forward to find, scoop, post and tweet, the reflective part of the educationational enterprise may get trampled underfoot.
