General purpose academic word lists, such as Coxhead’s (2000) academic word list, are widely used in the teaching English for Academic purposes. However, word frequencies in some micro-level aspects of academic discourse are yet to be determined, such as subject-specific word lists in some areas. This study has generated knowledge of noun frequencies in sentence transitions containing anaphoric lexical references to the preceding sentence.

Investigating a corpus of approximately 5.6 million words of academic texts from the Social Sciences and Humanities has led to a list of 71 nouns most frequently used in cohesive nominal groups in these areas. This list was compiled with Antconc (Anthony, 2014) by examining eight syntactic structures containing an anaphoric determiner and noun. The list can be used alongside more general purpose lists to support L2 academic writing development. As well as the main list, two significant sub-lists have been identified: a list of items particularly useful for anaphoric references to a citation and a group of nouns that nominalise processes.

Four frequently occurring nouns in the data have been identified as forming partitive constructions with a cohesive aspect enabling the writer to narrow or broaden the range of analysis in the writing. In addition, there is a proposed order in which the eight cohesive structures investigated could be introduced within an EAP syllabus.

Language teachers making sense of exploratory practice: Hanks, 2015

This article critically examines the implementation of Exploratory Practice in an English for academic purposes (EAP) context in a British university. The innovation involved challenges as well as opportunities for uniting learning, teaching and research. Particular emphasis is given to two teachers, who are the focus of this article: the story of one, ‘Jenny’, illustrates the processes of doing Exploratory Practice with learners of EAP, while the story of the other, ‘Bella’, provides insight into the notion of puzzlement, a central feature of the Exploratory Practice framework. For these practitioners, it was clear that the integration of pedagogy with locally relevant, small-scale research activity, held a wealth of opportunities for language learning and teaching.

The CELC Symposium 2016 aims to provide a platform for examining how ELT, in higher education today, is multi-pedagogical, interdisciplinary and intercultural. Specifically, we are interested in papers that focus on connections between different disciplinary ideas and methods as well as socio-cultural, institutional and digital contexts that variously shape and are, in turn, enhanced by pedagogical engagements within the language and communication classroom.

"Strengthening connectivities in ELT: pedagogies, disciplines, cultures" thus seeks to explore how the three paradigms are evolving and how they continually interact with and impact one another.

Ray Carey and colleagues are "compiling a corpus of these English-language examiners’ statements submitted in 2011 & 2012 to six University of Helsinki faculties. We finished this task last month, ending up with 402,0135 words of text (the WrELFA corpus overall has passed 800,000 words since my last update). During that process, Ruut compiled figures from each of the faculties on how many examiners’ statements were submitted and what language they were written in. This post looks at where English stands in the examination process of one of the top research universities in Europe."
