Van der Zwaard: Patterns of (negotiated) interaction during telecollaboration between NSs and advanced NNSs

Dyadic communication between Australian and Dutch participants during a digital task designed as part of a telecollaboration project

The research project focuses on the occurrence of negotiation of meaning (or absence thereof) during one - to - one interaction via two forms of synchronous computer - mediated communication (SCMC): video call (or video call) and instant chat - messaging (written chat).

The studies aim to combine two of the most significant trends in L2 - education: digital technology and task - based language teaching (TBLT). Research into the efficacy of communication through different digital tools within L2 - learning environments is still underdeveloped, although the 21st - century networked society is entering the language classroom and educators are urged to include digital communication in (academic) language acquisition curricula. Negotiation of meaning studies have proven to be a prolific research area, although different claims have been made concer ning occurrence and effect and only recently have investigations started to explore the implications of negotiation of meaning during synchronous computer - mediated com munication. The studies in this book attempt to contribute to this budding area of research.

Analysing conversational engagement in online discussion tasks: Breffni O'Rourke

A discourse analytic framework for conversational engagement in online discussion tasks
Shona Whyte's insight:

I heard this presentation at EuroCALL in the Netherlands this summer.  Very interesting work on the characterisation of online interactions in discourse analytic terms.  One practical goal is a framework that allows teachers and researchers to distinguish successful from less successful online interaction, which at present we feel intuitively but struggle to demonstrate.

EuroCALL conference programme: August 22-25, Gothenburg, Sweden

Shona Whyte:

Here's the programme for this year's EuroCALL conference to be held at the end of August in Sweden.

It gives an interesting overview of trends in CALL (computer-assisted language learning) research - mobile learning, gamification, corpora, computer-mediated communication (CMC) and telecollaboration - and features many of the main researchers working in this area in Europe and further afield.

There are two papers on the iTILT project (interactive technologies in language teaching, http://itilt.eu):

Thursday 23 August, 10:45

Developing criteria for the design and evaluation of interactive whiteboard based materials: Intermediate findings from the iTILT project
Euline Cutrim Schmid, Sanderin van Hazebrouck, Margret Oberhofer

Saturday 25 August, 11:15

Perceptions of the IWB for second language teaching and learning: the iTILT
project
Shona Whyte, Gary Beauchamp, Emily Hillier

I'm also talking about curation for pre-service language teachers in the Teacher Education symposium on Thursday.
