La pensée CECR - Revue TDFLE no 70

La pensée CECR - Revue TDFLE no 70 | TELT | Scoop.it

I find the text inspector very useful, but it is not clearly saying the level of the text. So I would like to know which indicator is teeling the exact over all level of a text, ...http://goo.gl/DB4x1O

Shona Whyte:

"When we do listenings, we are teaching listening skills. But what are these skills and how do we teach them?"

A lengthy post by ELT teacher and trainer Hugh Dellar on the problems of teaching listening comprehension, with references to schema theory and McCarthy's notion of listenership.

Word Family Framework: CER levels

Word Family Framework: CER levels | TELT | Scoop.it

Type in a word, choose your CER level(s) (or all) and see which forms of the word are used for different proficiency speakers.

I have just learned that "debt" is categorised as A2, while "in debt" is B1 and "debtor" C1.  There are 22,000 words in the database.

The programme takes a while to churn out a result, and a bit longer if you want it in PDF format, and I must admit I've glad no-one requires me to take this kind of information into account when planning lessons or courses, but I assume it's meeting a pressing ELT demand ...

Thewissen 2012: Accuracy across proficiency levels : insights from an error-tagged EFL learner corpus

PhD dissertation using learner corpora:

"The behavioural trends found in the learner corpus sample were subsequently compared with the development implied in the CEF descriptors for grammatical accuracy, vocabulary control, orthographic control, coherence and cohesion. It was revealed that using the development attested by learner corpus data could lead to stronger, more concrete language descriptors for specific learner groups at given proficiency levels."

Word Family Framework: CER levels for English vocabulary

Word Family Framework: CER levels for English vocabulary | TELT | Scoop.it

Shona Whyte:

Here is a how-to guide and some background on the Word Family Framework (WFF), a searchable resource of 22 000 words developed by Richard West to help "institutions, teachers and learners to construct target vocabularies or individual learning, syllabus and lesson planning, materials design and exam preparation" with respect to the Common European Reference (CER) framework.

I admit to some scepticism regarding both word lists and the CER, but I'm sure the post will be relevant to many EFL/ESL teachers.
