Flipping the Classroom Requires More Than Video

Flipping the Classroom Requires More Than Video | TELT | Scoop.it

Here's what I think is relevant to language teachers about the flipped classroom:

"“If you structure your class exactly the same way you have always done but employ it flipped,” warns Richard Talyor, CMO for Echo360, “effectively what you have done is added an extra hour of class for every hour of class the student has. Respect the students’ time"

It's the extra time that language learners need, in addition to opportunities for interaction.

Des idées pour utiliser Pinterest à l’école. | TELT | Scoop.it

Learn Songs : Charles Kelly

Charles Kelly has a good list of folk songs, nursery rhymes and campfire songs (Jingle Bells, Twinkle Twinkle, Swanee River) which he has recorded for learners to listen and repeat.

Some also have a pedagogical focus on pronunciation: on Twinkle Twinkle, it's the flap ("soft t") in "little" and palatalisation in "what-you" ("whatchou").

The recordings are iPod compatible and you can watch some on YouTube.

An impromptu interactive dictogloss in 10 steps

An impromptu interactive dictogloss in 10 steps | TELT | Scoop.it

EFL teacher/MA student Laura Patsko talks us through an unplanned intermediate lesson using the IWB in a dictogloss activity with two students.

Dictogloss involves the teacher reading a script which the learners write down, leaving space for more details picked up in subsequent listenings.

Laura then had the learners write their text on the IWB, which they used to edit: moving words around, adding and replacing elements.  She then worked on accuracy, and finally had them highlight useful expressions for their notebooks.

Her blog post has explanations, the recording, plus photos of the IWB and IWB slides, so it's very easy for other teachers to follow.  So whether you're looking for ideas for your teaching, or examples of practice that may be different from what you're used to, this is a nice post (and Show and Tell is a nice blog).

NEWS FROM OUR BLOG
Below are just some of the latest stories we have been writing about on our blog.

iTILT data collection, second round
The iTILT project partners are currently in the middle of the second round of data collection, filming teachers using the IWB in classrooms all over Europe. Teachers of all educational sectors are involved, with a variety of languages and methodologies, including CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). So far, we have over 130 clips of teachers and we will end up with many more once this round has finished. The French team has now finished their second round of filming, with 9 project teachers. Read more here: http://itilt.eu/node/318

EuroCALL
The iTILT partners will be talking about the project at the EuroCALL conference in Gothenburg, Sweden on 22nd-25th August 2012. They will talk about “Perceptions of the IWB for second language teaching and learning” and “Developing criteria for the design and evaluation of interactive whiteboard based materials”. Second language acquisition (SLA) research: its significance for learning and teaching issues

Second language acquisition (SLA) research: its significance for learning and teaching issues | TELT | Scoop.it

Overview of SLA by Florence Myles for the Good Practice Guide, Languages Linguistics and Area Studies at the University of Southampton.

Abstract:

"The purpose of this general overview article is to outline how research into second language acquisition (SLA) over the last few decades has fed into our understanding of learning and teaching in foreign language classrooms. After a very brief overview of SLA research findings concerning both route and rate of L2 development, theoretical models attempting to explain these findings are presented, ranging from purely linguistic to cognitive models and social/interactionist models. The relationship between SLA research and second language pedagogy is then explored. Finally, recent developments investigating specifically the relationship between instruction and L2 development are outlined."

Includes glossary and links to applied linguistics websites.

Don't see a date; best guess 2002.

Learning English Online : Freiburg University of Education

Learning English Online : Freiburg University of Education | TELT | Scoop.it

This new English language learning portal has been developed by a team at the Pädagogische Hochschule of Freiburg as a complement to the state of Baden-Würtemburg's school programmes (level A1-A2; there is also a German version of the site).

It offers a traditional language course (based on the imaginary family so beloved of school textbooks), then additional sections on the four language skills and  language areas (vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation), some cultural options plus two extra sections called "magazine" and "videos" with links to external websites like the BBC.

A lot of different sections and links to explore, and more material to come.  I'd be interested to hear opinions ...
