Six things to do with Interactive Whiteboards

Six things to do with Interactive Whiteboards | TELT | Scoop.it

Daniel Martín has this guest post on Lindsay Clandfield's blog.

Lindsay says "Teachers have told me “yeah, IWBs, great…but we have nothing to use with them, no activities, no material”. This is where someone like Daniel Martin comes in. He has written a book called Activities for Interactive Whiteboards. I grabbed a hold of him at the last TESOL Spain conference and asked him for half a dozen ideas for a newbie like me. Here they are…

BritLit - Using literature in EFL classrooms

BritLit - Using literature in EFL classrooms
This e-book was originally published in print form by the Catalan Teachers of English Association, Associació de Professors d'Anglès de Catalunya (APAC), to help launch the BritLit initiative at the APAC Congress in February 2009. It coincided with a visit to schools in the city of author Louise Cooper, who also contributes to this book, and a short series of workshops for teachers about the project.

This slightly revised version has been produced because it was recognised that teachers worldwide would be interested in the contents, not just those fortunate enough to live in Catalonia. The contents cover the whole range of BritLit activity in that the voices of teachers and authors are heard along with some comments from students, as well as more detailed studies from the project team and academics.

The BritLit project has produced numerous resources for teachers and students, which can be found on the British Council TeachingEnglish website http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/britlit

These include the complete versions of the sample kits to be found in this book as well as nearly 40 other resource packs or kits, ranging from stories for primary school learners of English to those studying at tertiary level.

EFL lesson plans using online videos — English Clips

EFL lesson plans using online videos — English Clips | TELT | Scoop.it

This new EFL resource site by Chris Lea (?) at present offers only one lesson plan, but it's tagged to suggest many more are planned.

'Flying Rhinos' is a B1-level listening lesson on the topic of wildlife conservation, using web-based resources (Vimeo, the National Geographic website, and others) for pre- and post-listening activities, and including a 7-item multiple choice handout for the class.

For those who like this idea, Jamie Keddie's lessonstream.org has more video-based lessons.

Six computer games to use in an English language classroom

Six computer games to use in an English language classroom | TELT | Scoop.it

Lindsay Clandfield says

"Another guest list that I’ve picked up during conference season, this time from language teaching games expert Kyle Mawer. Kyle doesn’t make computer games for language learners (often these aren’t very good), he finds existing games and exploits them with his classes. The result is some serious fun and language learning combined. Here he shows six ways that this is not just child’s play…"

Crazy animals and other activities for teaching young learners

Edited by Fiona Copland and Sue Garton with Monika Davis
This is a book for primary school teachers of English written by primary school teachers of English. It brings together the experience and expertise of teachers from around the world to provide a range of stimulating and exciting classroom activities for the primary classroom.

There are 50 tried and trusted activities which have been refined and improved over the years by teachers working in diverse contexts and environments. Children will enjoy practising their English through these stimulating and motivating activities.

Over 1 000 teachers were contacted and asked to send their favourite activities for teaching English to young learners.  The most original and creative activities received were selected for this book. This book grew out of an Aston University - British Council research project called ‘Investigating Global Practices in Teaching English to Young Learners’:

Sandy Millin - Go online: getting your students to use Internet resources

Sandy Millin - Go online: getting your students to use Internet resources | TELT | Scoop.it

Sandy Millin says "Ultimately, we shouldn’t force our students to use technology if they don’t really want to. It doesn’t suit everyone. However, if we at least show them what’s out there and give them the chance to experiment with it, students can make their own decisions about whether or not to use the tools."

A good selection of tools and activities for students to exploit in class and out, with computers, tablets, or smart phones.

Learning Resource Exchange

Learning Resource Exchange | TELT | Scoop.it

The Learning Resource Exchange (LRE) from European Schoolnet (EUN) is a service that enables schools to find educational content from many different countries and providers. It was developed in order to provide Ministries of Education with access to a network of learning content repositories and associated tools that allow them to more easily exchange high quality learning resources that ‘travel well’ and can be used by teachers in different countries.
