"Free online foreign language lessons"

Shona Whyte:

Suspicious as usual, I checked out this site.  Not clear who is behind it, but it does seem to be completely free and the sound etc works fine.  I checked English for French beginners (leçon de Anglaise (sic)) - decontextualised behaviourist approach with exercises for listening and repeating, matching phrases with their translation equivalents, and chances to test yourself.  Not my first choice for learning a language, but it may suit some.

Slow Writing: how slowing down can improve your writing

Slow Writing: how slowing down can improve your writing | TELT | Scoop.it

Shona Whyte:

This post by "Learning Spy" David Didau concerns teaching native language writing in high school, but has ideas that can apply to second and foreign language writing too, as one reader points out:

Jacqui Turner -
These ideas have great implications for the MFL classroom too. I teach French and not only do students have to demonstrate a rich and varied vocabulary, but they must do so with an array of verb constructions too. The ‘writing to order’ idea combines these aspects beautifully. I also feel getting them to slow down would help them reflect on their overall linguistic accuracy and hopefully help minimise language errors. It would seem students don't proofread in any language! Many thanks for sharing.

Voyant Tools: Reveal Your Texts

Voyant Tools: Reveal Your Texts | TELT | Scoop.it

This is a very interesting tool for analysing text and word frequency in text. It enables you to create your own mini corpus and see how words are used in context.

Randy Rebman's curator insight, December 15, 2012 7:54 PM

This tool allows you to easily export the concordance lines into a text file. Provided the text was either online or in a text file, it also makes identifying vocabulary words in texts easier. As a corpus tool on the web, I find the option of being able to upload multiple texts into the corpus one of the benefits of the site. But this tool is still in Beta mode, so there may still be some kinks with it that need worked out.

Foreign Language Teaching Methods: Technology

Foreign Language Teaching Methods: Technology | TELT | Scoop.it

"Professional development modules for foreign language instruction at the high-school and college levels."

Shona Whyte:

Orlando Kelm of the University of Texas presents a four-lesson module for foreign language teaching training on technology in the FL classroom.  The four lessons involve:

1 Time on Task
Presents how technology can aid in the learning of foreign languages by providing learners with increased time on task.

2 Context
Explores how the effective use of technology has the potential of creating a context for language learning situations.

3 Chunks and Scripts
Demonstrates how technology can play a role in providing learners with the "chunks" and "scripts" that people use in actual speech.

4 Input vs. Intake
Discusses how technology can provide learners with increased exposure to a foreign language, but more importantly, it can also serve to increase a learner's conscious awareness of what is heard.

Curate and Publish Navigable Lists of Links with URList

Curate and Publish Navigable Lists of Links with URList | TELT | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Urlist is a web-based collaborative tool to create, publish and share navigable lists of links.

Links can be easily typed or collected with the complementary bookmarklet tool, and provided with a custom description. URList automatically collects the thumbnail for each one, and the list author decides whether individual items in the list can be commented and rated by viewers.

Items in a list can be easily sorted, moved around and edited at any point and each list can be set to be "public", "private" or "hidden" from public view. Lists can be set to be collaborative so that other users can contribute to them.

Every URlist can be also browsed as a sequence of viewable website links kept in context by a top-of-the-page navigation bar, which allows to move at any moment to any link in the list or to follow the list as it has been organized by the author.
