Tech Tools for Teachers

Tech Tools for Teachers | TELT | Scoop.it

Some of you may be working in a technology-rich environment where you have interactive whiteboards and students have access to the internet in the classroom, or a computer lab that you can take students to. Some of you may only have a single computer in your classroom or, perhaps, like the majority of schools around the world, you may have no computer access in school at all. Whichever is the case, this series will still have something to offer you and will enable you to offer something more to your students, either in class or through the development of more motivating homework tasks that students can access outside of school.

Lyndsay's curator insight, April 3, 2013 10:29 PM

This resources is extremely valuable for educators when teaching digital technologies. It allows students to learn how to design and implement  visual programs, use a range of digital systems and use safe online communications (ACARA, 2013). It provides many explanations surrounding many available digital technologies for the classroom which is titled 'Tech Tools for Teachers' and would allow educators to effectively implement digital technologies into their planning.

Writing links: NPCC Arkansas tutor recommendations

Tutoring services at the National Park Community College in Arkansas have this 27-page annotated collection of links to other university resources for writing: from topics and planning through drafting, revising, and editing, style sheets (APA, MLA), plagiarism. Suitable for high intermediate/advanced EFL/ESL students, particularly EAP, but also for instructors to select from. I can't find an author or a direct link from the website, but this resource certainly deserves a wider audience.

Using group work in large classes | TeachingEnglish (British Council | BBC)

Using group work in large classes | TeachingEnglish (British Council | BBC) | TELT | Scoop.it

"In this programme we look at a reality many teachers face: very large classes – and using group work as a technique to get everyone working actively. We hear from teachers on how they use group work and look at techniques for managing large classes. How do you feel about teaching large classes?"

Programme Summary: Large classes are a reality for many teachers around the world – especially in the state sector. If we want to develop our students’ fluency and ability to communicate in English then using group work will help. If set up carefully, it will give all the students a chance to participate and practise. The teacher’s role changes during group work. While the students work in groups the teacher moves away from the front of the class and quietly monitors. During this part of the lesson, you are giving more responsibility to your students and there are many rewards. Group work can be highly motivating for students. They participate and are active and we can
draw on our students’ own knowledge and experience. As Mirany says, ‘Dynamism springs from the group’

Introducing English as a Lingua Franca: An Online Tutorial

This tutorial aims to raise students' awareness of their own use of English in mixed language groups. It begins with a brief background to ELF and to a discourse analytic approach to talk-in-interaction. The main section of the tutorial is a description of a group activity which students can do in or outside of class, involving:

recording a group discussiontrying transcriptioncomparing and discussing a short section of their transcription.

The activity is described in detailed steps, making this tutorial one which students should be able to follow without further input from a module tutor. The tutorial contains interactive flashcards of transcription symbols, video and audio of classroom discussion in mixed language groups, and suggestions for further reading.
