speech accent archive

speech accent archive | TELT | Scoop.it

Shona Whyte:

483 accents of English - audio files for the same text, male and female speakers from a variety of English-speaking countries plus non-natives.

Great for phonetics/phonology practice, or just demonstrating phonological variation to dispel the myth that there's one "standard" pronunciation.

Sounds Familiar? British Library learning resource

Sounds Familiar? British Library learning resource | TELT | Scoop.it

"Sounds Familiar? Accents and Dialects of the UK

Do you call a ‘bread roll’ a cob, batch, bread cake, barm cake or scuffler? How do you pronounce the words cup and plant? And are you sitting or sat at this computer? The UK is a rich landscape of regional accents and dialects, each evidence of our society’ s continuity and change, our local history and our day-to-day lives. This site captures and celebrates the diversity of spoken English in the second half of the twentieth century."

Shona Whyte:

Useful for teachers wishing to demonstrate the variety of British accents and dialects, or for language students to broaden their English language experience.  LInguistics students can also find information on language change, phonology, and dialect studies.

Twinvox

Twinvox | TELT | Scoop.it
Ricard Garcia:
Here's a good site for those who care about speaking! Excellent service where people can share their communicative skills as native speakers of a language as they share a good time with someone else who is willing to learn that language through a videochat within the twinvox platform. Find peers and start sharing your skills and learning for free from someone else the language you want to learn. Good initiative, indeed!

Welcome
"Lit2Go is a free online collection of stories and poems in Mp3 (audiobook) format. An abstract, citation, playing time, and word count are given for each of the passages. Many of the passages also have a related reading strategy identified. Each reading passage can also be downloaded as a PDF and printed for use as a read-along or as supplemental reading material for your classroom."

Mostly American out-of-copyright classics aimed at native-speakers, but well put together for teachers (transcript, reading level, word count) so usable for intermediate-plus teen or adult learners.

Shona Whyte:

Veraguas EFL Teachers blog recommends this video for teaching or reinforcing prepositions of place to young learners.

Deathless lyrics:

"Preposition, it’s your ambition
to tell me tell me tell me
exactly my position
Preposition, You’re on a mission
to tell me tell me tell me
exactly my position"

Learn Songs : Charles Kelly

Charles Kelly has a good list of folk songs, nursery rhymes and campfire songs (Jingle Bells, Twinkle Twinkle, Swanee River) which he has recorded for learners to listen and repeat.

Some also have a pedagogical focus on pronunciation: on Twinkle Twinkle, it's the flap ("soft t") in "little" and palatalisation in "what-you" ("whatchou").

The recordings are iPod compatible and you can watch some on YouTube.

Pronunciation animations - Cambridge University Press English Language Teaching

Pronunciation animations - Cambridge University Press English Language Teaching | TELT | Scoop.it

Shona Whyte:

This site has animations with sound to help learners with sounds (diphthongs), stress (word and sentence stress), and intonation (rising and falling intonation).  It also has phonemic charts for English vowels and consonants - click on the symbol to hear the sound.

Useful for even beginning learners, and a good resource for checking general rules (e.g., word stress) and the phonemic inventory of English.  Teacher can supplement these basic rules with additional examples and more detailed rules for pronunciation.

10 Speaking English Activities using TED.com

10 Speaking English Activities using TED.com | TELT | Scoop.it

Kalinago English (EFL teacher, trainer and materials writer Karenne Joy Sylvester):
"I'm fond of using TED with my adult language learners (+ similar sites - see here for a list of others) for the ingenuity and its realistic relevance and because I know that whenever I visit TED I'll always find short, topical talks which can be used to kick-off real discussions within my classroom: stuff my adult students want to know and talk more about... speeches that will either captivate their interest or through understanding, even with lower students at only 50%, will encourage them to feel a greater motivation about where their English is going."
