I Am Poems

I Am Poems | TELT | Scoop.it

Jackie Gerstein:

"The "I Am Poem" is a template-based poem that requires students to represent themselves in the form of poetry as well as in visual form."

Shona Whyte:

This is a great activity for intermediate learners and above, or it could be simplified for young learners.  Class members write a poem about themselves using the template, then e-mail their poems with a photo to a Flickr account or shared Google Docs presentation.  All class members can view each others' poems, and they can then be shared in class with each person reading their contribution aloud.

Little Bird Tales - Public Tales | TELT | Scoop.it

"Little Bird Tales: Capture the Voice of Childhood. We offer a fun, unique way to create, record and share stories online."

This looks like a nice site for digital storytelling.  You can draw, type, upload photos and add your own narration.  You can also access stories submitted by members.  Free registration and access to public tales; there's a commercial side too.

There seems to be a problem with FlashPlayer 11.2 which they believe will be resolved when 11.3 is released.

BritLit - Using literature in EFL classrooms

BritLit - Using literature in EFL classrooms
This e-book was originally published in print form by the Catalan Teachers of English Association, Associació de Professors d'Anglès de Catalunya (APAC), to help launch the BritLit initiative at the APAC Congress in February 2009. It coincided with a visit to schools in the city of author Louise Cooper, who also contributes to this book, and a short series of workshops for teachers about the project.

This slightly revised version has been produced because it was recognised that teachers worldwide would be interested in the contents, not just those fortunate enough to live in Catalonia. The contents cover the whole range of BritLit activity in that the voices of teachers and authors are heard along with some comments from students, as well as more detailed studies from the project team and academics.

The BritLit project has produced numerous resources for teachers and students, which can be found on the British Council TeachingEnglish website http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/britlit

These include the complete versions of the sample kits to be found in this book as well as nearly 40 other resource packs or kits, ranging from stories for primary school learners of English to those studying at tertiary level.

Revisiting texts: vocabulary activities (Leo Selivan)

Revisiting texts: vocabulary activities (Leo Selivan) | TELT | Scoop.it

Leo Selivan, EFL teacher and fan of the lexical approach, writes for the British Council's TeachingEnglish site.

He has some activities for helping students to extract useful language from the texts they read.

He says:

"We often encourage our students to infer words from the context as they read and, as a result, they fail to notice useful lexis in the texts we use. This is especially true in case of chunks consisting of the words students already know. For example, students may be familiar with run and risk but not know the collocation run a risk. However, since the meaning is transparent they will probably “glance over” it when meeting it in the text. This series of activities is aimed to draw students’ attention to the useful lexis in the texts."

The Extensive Reading Pages | TELT | Scoop.it

"This site is a repository for information on Extensive Reading, with an emphasis on its application to Second or Foreign Language Learning."

Thomas Robb has saved this material from a number of JALT conferences.  You can find reading resources and teaching aids, links to research supporting extensive reading in second language learning and teaching (Bell, Krashen, Waring), and advice on setting up an extensive reading programme.

Worth a look if you haven't come across these arguments, or for teachers who want to get their learners reading more.
