"Tools for developing materials for less widely used and taught languages TWUTL. TOOLS is developing a free online tool, which will enable you to create media rich webpages for language learning. The unique feature of this free online tool is the way it treats embedded texts, at the touch of a button all words are automatically linked to our bespoke dictionary interface Multidict, which places online dictionaries in +100 languages at the user’s disposal, thereby enabling them to interrogate the text at their own pace and according to their own personal need. The fully online tool has also been optimised for mobile devices (e.g. iPads, smartphones etc.) thereby ensuring that content can be created and enjoyed on the move."
"Sample sentences have long been a standard feature in many online and offline dictionaries. Starting today, Google Translate will also feature sentences that put translated words into context." Shona Whyte: This short review outlines Google Translate's new functionality, warning that the sample sentence is drawn from recent uses and does not necessarily exemplify the relevant meaning.

"Practice English vocabulary, the alphabet, and numbers. Place your cursor over an image to hear it pronounced aloud." This is a good audio-picture dictionary for English (and other languages). There are also grammar overviews and a test mode where you can quiz yourself. This type of site is never going to replace rich input and interaction, but you can use it for revision or to help learn vocabulary.
"How to pronounce words (and use them) A video-based pronunciation dictionary with usage examples. Most dictionaries provide audio pronunciations of words to help learners. It's rare, however, to find videos that are tagged and time-stamped for learning pronunciations, allowing learners to jump to times when a given word is used by a speaker. We see tagged videos not only helping in learning how to pronounce a word, but they could also be effective in illustrating word usage and certain cultural concepts."

Nik Peachey: The OneLook reverse dictionary is a great tool to get students thinking about how they explain what words mean. Unlike most dictionaries which gives you the meaning of a word, this one will give you the word as long as you can give the correct maning. This is a great skill to develop as a language learner.

When your entry appears in pink, mouse over to hear it pronounced. Create lists of up to 15 entries like this: cat; cart; cut; caught etc. There are currently 158,480 entries in the dictionary."
Whether it's for preparing classroom resources or modelling strategies in real time, language teachers need reliable reference materials. These dictionaries are free to access and great quality: you have audio plus some contextualisation, and you can consult monolingual or bilingual versions for quite a range of European languages.
