iTILT: langues secondes interactives

iTILT: langues secondes interactives | TELT | Scoop.it

Shona Whyte's insight:

EuroCALL conference programme: August 22-25, Gothenburg, Sweden

Shona Whyte:

Here's the programme for this year's EuroCALL conference to be held at the end of August in Sweden.

It gives an interesting overview of trends in CALL (computer-assisted language learning) research - mobile learning, gamification, corpora, computer-mediated communication (CMC) and telecollaboration - and features many of the main researchers working in this area in Europe and further afield.

There are two papers on the iTILT project (interactive technologies in language teaching, http://itilt.eu):

Thursday 23 August, 10:45

Developing criteria for the design and evaluation of interactive whiteboard based materials: Intermediate findings from the iTILT project
Euline Cutrim Schmid, Sanderin van Hazebrouck, Margret Oberhofer

Saturday 25 August, 11:15

Perceptions of the IWB for second language teaching and learning: the iTILT
project
Shona Whyte, Gary Beauchamp, Emily Hillier

I'm also talking about curation for pre-service language teachers in the Teacher Education symposium on Thursday.

CALICO Journal

Here's the May issue of CALICO journal (Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium), with a review of Web 2.0 and SLA (Wang & Vasquez), a study of group dynamics in wikis (Arnold, Ducate & Kost), a telecollaboration paper (Schenker), one on Facebook (Mitchell), voice blogs (Sun), task-based CMC (Yanguas), a web-based multimedia program (Pardo-Ballester) and an overview of distance teaching (Vorobel & Kim).

A new spotlight feature focuses on digital flashcards for vocabulary (Zhu, Fung Bnu-Hkbu & Wang).

Not open access, unfortunately, but worth a look if only to find out about "social loafing and free riding" in US university German classes ... (Arnold, Ducate & Kost).

Thouësny & Bradley (2011) | Second language teaching and learning with technology

Thouësny & Bradley (2011) | Second language teaching and learning with technology | TELT | Scoop.it

This edited volume by Sylvie Thouësny and Linda Bradley can be downloaded free from the above link (or you can contribute, or pay for print if you like).

It showcases recent doctoral work in a variety of CALL contexts (distance and blended learning, MALL, CMC) and from different theoretical perspectives (task-based learning, intercultural competence, learner autonomy).  The work all shows the clear theoretical framework, solid empirical data, and up-to-the-minute references we associate with the best dissertations, and the articles were prepared with input from leading researchers such as Blin, Gimeno-Sanz, and Kukulska-Hulme to name but three.
