Thinking about Syncing? iOS Apps for World Language education - Catherine Ousselin

Thinking about Syncing? iOS Apps for World Language education - Catherine Ousselin | TELT | Scoop.it

I have compiled a fairly comprehensive list of Apps designed for Apple products (iPhone, iPod, and iPad). These Apps are helpful for both the learner and the educator. Many are free, some are under $5.00, and a few are major purchases (+$15.00). These lists will all update regularly with your input. Below are links to other experts in the mobile device technology area.

Shona Whyte's insight:

Lots of apps, beautifully organised and presented.

The best freeware corpus analysis program for translators?

The best freeware corpus analysis program for translators? | TELT | Scoop.it

Michael Wilkinson: "not all translators – and especially student translators – are prepared to invest in […] software, especially if they are uncertain whether they will be using it on a large scale. One solution is to turn to a freeware program such as AntConc.

The first version of AntConc was released in 2002 by Laurence Anthony. It was a simple concordance program, but since then it has undergone continuous improvement and development. The most recent “stable-release” version at the time of writing (February 2012) is AntConc 3.2.4(Anthony, 2011).

AntConc can run on Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems, but whereas WordSmith requires additional software to run on systems other than Windows, AntConc runs on all three systems without additional software. In addition, AntConc is able to process texts in almost any language in the world, including Asian languages, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Moreover AntConc can process both UTF-8 and all legacy encodings on different systems, so it should be able to process texts saved in the operating system default encoding on all systems.

Like WordSmith, AntConc comprises, in addition to the concordancer, various other features, such as a tool for generating word-lists as well as a keyword tool that can locate and identify words that occur with an unusually high (or low) frequency in a corpus when it is compared with a reference corpus. However in the following I shall focus mainly on how well the concordancer serves the needs of the translator.

Nik's Learning Technology Blog: How I use social media for my professional development

Nik's Learning Technology Blog: How I use social media for my professional development | TELT | Scoop.it

The issue of how we use social media for our own development as teachers and as digitally skilled individuals, is one that I believe is of vital importance though, not just because it can enable us to keep developing as teachers through the content, ideas, resources and above all people it gives us access to, but also because the way use digital media for our own development should guide and influence the way we use it with our students and build their digital literacies and communication skills.

Learning and Teaching English with the New Media

"Students of the University of Marburg have created a collection of 24 teaching ideeas for the use of the new media in English lessons. The seminar "New Media in Foreign Language Education (2010/11)" was the starting point for the students to work on six topics such as "Learning Vocabulary", "Digital Storytelling" and "Listening Comprehension". All teaching ideas include tasks that can be used right aways, variations for different age groups and hints for a hassle-free use of the tools in class. A great inspiration for English language teachers!"

Shona Whyte's insight:

Some great ideas for using different tools for different language teaching objectives, including brief description of tools, didactic applications, ideas for classroom use, variations and hints.  A very effective format for teacher training also, perhaps useful for novice-expert teacher tandems.

Some of you may be working in a technology-rich environment where you have interactive whiteboards and students have access to the internet in the classroom, or a computer lab that you can take students to. Some of you may only have a single computer in your classroom or, perhaps, like the majority of schools around the world, you may have no computer access in school at all. Whichever is the case, this series will still have something to offer you and will enable you to offer something more to your students, either in class or through the development of more motivating homework tasks that students can access outside of school.

This resources is extremely valuable for educators when teaching digital technologies. It allows students to learn how to design and implement  visual programs, use a range of digital systems and use safe online communications (ACARA, 2013). It provides many explanations surrounding many available digital technologies for the classroom which is titled 'Tech Tools for Teachers' and would allow educators to effectively implement digital technologies into their planning.
