Nice slides with good advice for moving learners away from school assignments towards more modern, personal and engaging talks. "Beware the first idea that pops into your head" is my favourite of the 52 tips, which include some psychobabble but otherwise solid advice and concrete suggestions.

Shona Whyte's insight:
Powerpoint presentations with animation on the interactive whiteboard to increase pace and variety in order to maintain pupils' concentration. Also colour coding (blue, pink, green for gender and plural) to encourage noticing of grammatical features.

Mohamed (Med) Kharbach: "Slideshows are great learning tools. They are used by both students and teachers for a variety of purposes and most important of them all is to summarize key ideas and concepts and present them in such a catchy way that readers enjoy exploring. I am pretty sure you all have ,at some point in your teaching, included slideshows in your lessons and in case you want to discover some other free tools to create slideshows and presentations then I would recommed that you read this list of Free Presentation creation tools for Teachers."
PDF Presenter is a presentation software with focus on PDF documents.
This looks like a nice tool for presenting from PDF, which we often want to do to avoid problems with different versions of other software. It includes annotation tools and a whiteboard.

Language Testing in Europe: Time for a New Framework? International Conference hosted by Universiteit Antwerpen 27-29 May 2013
We hereby extend a cordial invitation to attend our Second International Conference on Language Testing. This conference will bring together practitioners, policy makers and researchers in order to discuss the following issues related to the use of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in language testing.
• Competence and performance What is the link between ‘can do’ performance statements and areas of linguistic knowledge? To what extent can or should the levels be made more explicit in terms of required vocabulary and grammar?
• Degree of difficulty of the levels How can we make sure that our tests are measuring at the CEFR levels we claim they are? What evidence do we have to support our claims?
• Test purpose Why are we testing? What kind of decisions will be made on the basis of information collected via the test? What will be the consequences of these decisions?
• Practicality How do we link our tests to the CEFR? How practical, applicable and operational is the CEFR for concrete language testing situations? You are invited to submit a proposal for a practice-related paper, a research paper, a poster session or a symposium. The scientific committee will designate three submissions as ‘Selected Plenaries’.
Please visit our website (http://www.ua.ac.be/main.aspx?c=.LT-CEFR2013) for any information regarding submission, calendar, venue and programme. Looking forward to meeting you in Antwerp.
"TED Talks From the "I have a dream" speech to Steve Jobs’ iPhone launch, all great presentations have a common architecture. In this talk, Nancy Duarte draws lessons on how to make a powerful call-to-action."
Shona Whyte:
Interesting analysis of powerful presentations showing a common underlying structure - moving back and forth between the present situation and future possibilities. Useful to help students reflect on their goals in a presentation, and how to attract and hold an audience. (She follows the model in her own presentation, of course!)
High school social studies teacher Spiro Bolos guest blogs on Richard Byrnes' Free Technology for Teachers website on combining low-text Powerpoint slides with Voicethread or Google Apps comment options to make lectures less "one-way" by integrating "student voices."
In the foreign language classroom, this technique could be employed to improve interaction around student-created presentations also.
"Slideonline.com lets you upload and share PowerPoint and PDF presentations online, publicly or privately - free."
Sometimes you want to have your slides online but not public before you give your presentation, or want your learners to be able to keep their work private. This tool seems to fill the gap left when slideshare switched private uploading to their premium option.
