"Free online foreign language lessons"

Shona Whyte:

Suspicious as usual, I checked out this site.  Not clear who is behind it, but it does seem to be completely free and the sound etc works fine.  I checked English for French beginners (leçon de Anglaise (sic)) - decontextualised behaviourist approach with exercises for listening and repeating, matching phrases with their translation equivalents, and chances to test yourself.  Not my first choice for learning a language, but it may suit some.

From Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) to Mobile Assisted Language Use (MALU)

From Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) to Mobile Assisted Language Use (MALU) | TELT | Scoop.it

In this recent TESL-EJ articles, Jarvis and Achilleos review different  terminology for connecting technology and SLA (TELL, WELL, NBLL).  On the basis of questionnaire data showing EFL users' preferences for mobile technology, they suggest changing two letters in the CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) acronym: Computer becomes Mobile and Learning become Use in MALU (Mobile Assisted Language Use).

The authors conclude that "MALU now needs to be our defining point of reference in keeping TESOL at the vanguard."

Shona Whyte's insight:

Which I suppose is fine if English is your frame of reference.  If the field is to include other languages, it's not so easy to make the argument.

17 popular opinions about language learning and teaching

17 popular opinions about language learning and teaching | TELT | Scoop.it

List of assumptions about L2 teaching and learning from Lightbown and Spada's 2006 handbook.

Shona Whyte's insight:

In pre-service teacher training sessions, we've had the most fun with "Students learn what they are taught."  I always disagree with it on the grounds that learners will pick up extra, different information about the L2 from input in class, and not necessarily focus on any specific objectives the teacher has set.  My students often disagree because they think learners are lazy and don't bother to memorise the information the teacher transmits.

Shona Whyte's insight:

Concrete suggestions for helping EFL/ESL learners understand and discuss assigned readings while also developing other academic skills (moderating discussion, summarising, re-expressing meaning in alternative forms).  Handouts and examples from the classroom, including minimal and richer student responses.

Shona Whyte's insight:

Much of the discussion would be relevant to non-language teaching contexts.  Interesting for my work with pre-service EFL teachers at a French university.  #eltchat is probably a good place for them to begin developing a PLN.

Language teaching videos: Touring a French City

"The video library excerpts capture the range of foreign language teaching practices shown in the collection. You will see students in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms studying eight different languages. You'll see the students communicating with one another and with their teacher, learning culturally rich content, making connections to other disciplines, comparing cultures, and using the language in real-life contexts."

Shona Whyte's insight:

The Annenberg Foundation has this series of edited classroom videos showing examples of activities taught in second language classrooms with learner and teacher commentaries.  For professional development, there are also questions to guide teachers in their analysis of the examples (French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian).
