Learning & Teaching Foreign Languages: Story Adaptation

Learning & Teaching Foreign Languages: Story Adaptation | TELT | Scoop.it

These slideshow presentations with audio were created by 8 year-old pupils in a French primary school EFL class, based on Emily Gravett's children's book The Odd Egg.

The class worked on the story in six 90-minute sessions, working on the names of animals which lay eggs (birds, reptiles, insects) and the verbs in the story (wait, crack, hatch) using flashcards and worksheets.

In a final task, the learners narrated slideshow presentations: they typed the correct verbs into a template, chose and drew the baby to emerge from the egg, and made an audio recording of their story.

Déjà vu? A decade of research on language laboratories, television and video in language learning

The developments in the last ten years in the form of DVD, streaming video, video on demand, interactive television and digital language laboratories call for an assessment of the research into language teaching and learning making use of these technologies and the learning paradigms underpinning them. This paper surveys research on language teaching and learning using these and older technologies since 1999, and maps out some pointers for future research. The evidence suggests that research on video and language learning using DVD and other recent technologies is already well established, bringing out a number of issues for further study. In contrast, research-led implementation of the enhanced functionality of digital language laboratories is hardly in its infancy and much language laboratory use is marginal at best.

Shona Whyte's insight:
Haven't checked this for a while: seems like a nice resource if you have doubts about the pronunciation of a particular word. I checked random words in French and English and found a range of nativelike pronunciation. Very easy to search and listen.

Media Literacy in Foreign Language Education: Digital and Multimodal Perspective

Upcoming International Conference at the University of Munich, Germany March 12th - 15th, 2017

Call for Papers

With the ever-growing significance and diversification of media, there is a call to challenge, renegotiate, and expand on current discourses that have formulated media literacy as an integral objective in 21st century education. Foreign language education is increasingly responding to this development by updating and trans - forming EFL pedagogies. This conference will engage with the epistemological and critical foundations of media literacy and how these interact with foreign language education in practice across varied contexts. This includes concerns such as how multimodal and digital media impact meaning-making practices in learning; the inherent potentials and challenges that are foregrounded in the use of multimodal and digital media; and the contribution that foreign language education can provide in developing media literacy as a whole. We are additionally concerned with how digital and multimodal media can be meaningfully linked with sub-fields in foreign language education, such as trans- and intercultural learning, global education, learning with literature, and language acquisition and competence development. In light of these trajectories, we welcome contributions that explore media literacy in theory and practice from diverse and interdisciplinary perspectives.

Confirmed Keynote Speakers (in alphabetical order)
Catherine Beavis Deakin University, Australia
Bill Cope University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA
Mary Kalantzis University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA
Gunther Kress,

Teaching phonology for reading comprehension: Catherine Walter

__________________________________________________________________________________ My research has shown that intermediate second language (L2) learners can understand each sentence of a text without being able to build a mental representation of the overall text. This failur e is linked to the development of L2 processing abilities. My latest study (2008) shows that a factor in poor L2 processing of written text is, counter -intuitively, an unreliable L2 phonological inventory. This suggests strongly that teaching phonology w ill help L2 learners read better.
