OT 12: an Open Translation MOOC

OT 12: an Open Translation MOOC | TELT | Scoop.it

"The Department of Languages at the British Open University is planning the OT12 MOOC, a Massive Open Online Course on Open Translation tools and practices. Our pilot will run from 15th October to 7 December 2012 (8 weeks), with the accompanying course website opening on Oct 10th 2012. If you and/or your students are interested in taking part, go to the "Get involved" tab on the following site: http://www.ot12.org/

Not sure what this is all about?

Well, MOOCs are free online courses, open to anybody and everybody anywhere in the world. They usually bring together large numbers of learners and instructors across a common field of knowledge. Whilst MOOCs provide weekly topics, activities, discussions and resources, learners actively engage in all aspects of the experience, sharing ideas in forums, undertaking collaborative or reflective activities, and using a variety of social media.

Open Translation tools and practices
Open Translation practices rely on crowd sourcing, and are used for translating open resources such as TED talks and Wikipedia articles, and also in global blogging and citizen media projects such as Global Voices [http://globalvoicesonline.org/].
There are many tools to support Open Translation practices, from Google translation tools [http://translate.google.com/] to online dictionaries like Wordreference [http://www.wordreference.com/], or translation workflow tools like Transifex [https://www.transifex.com/].
Some of these will be explored in the OT12 MOOC.

Bridge to success (B2S) ... in more than one language!
The content with which we are going to engage (translations into Spanish and potentially also other languages), includes the highly successful B2S modules available in the free OpenLearn Labspace:
1) Learning to Learn http://labspace.open.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=7442
and
2) Success with Math http://labspace.open.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=7654

We will also engage in captioning and subtitling activities using a variety of videos in English and Spanish.
Intrigued? Well then, come and join us this autumn!

Video-Based Response & Revision: Dialogic Instruction Using Video and Web 2.0 Technologies

Video-Based Response & Revision: Dialogic Instruction Using Video and Web 2.0 Technologies | TELT | Scoop.it

Shona Whyte:

Description of methodology for using technology to support and research the development of dialogic instruction in a collaboratively oriented teacher education course.

Anne Heintz, Carlin Borsheim, Samantha Caughlan, & Mary M. Juzwik; Michigan State University

Michael B. Sherry; Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania

Abstract

This article documents the curricular decisions made by a teacher educator research team whose guiding theoretical focus for intern practice is dialogic instruction. Over a 2-year sequence, teaching interns used video and Web 2.0 technologies to respond critically to and revise their teaching practices in collaboration with peers and instructors. This article describes how a focus on dialogic instruction and an adoption of a multiliteracies pedagogy guided the implementation and use of technologies within the project. Through multiple examples of curriculum, including excerpts from course materials, screencasts of the adopted networking platform, Voicethread, and video of class sessions, the authors describe how a focus on the dialogic creates spaces for interactions that allow responsive and revisionary attitudes toward not only teaching practices, but the potential and place of technologies in teacher education.

Networked Learning and Connectivism for English Language Teachers by Michael Griffiths on Prezi

Connectivism 101: this presentation quotes Siemens and Salmon to produce a basic overview of connectivism, though without the specific focus on language teachers I was expecting from the title.

Bottom line for teacher education is "drive it yourself" - it's up to teachers to choose what you they want to learn and how to go about it.  Which I find both liberating and frustrating.

Key concepts in ELT: Taking stock (Graham Hall)

Free (limited) access to this ELT article:

This article identifies patterns and trends within ‘Key Concepts in ELT’, both since the inception of the feature in ELT Journal in 1993 and during the 17 years of the current editorship. After outlining the aims of the series, the article identifies key themes that have emerged over time, exploring the links between ‘Key Concepts’ pieces and the trends and developments in ELT more generally. It finds that although earlier articles tended to focus on ‘teaching’, ‘learning’, and ‘language’, more recent pieces have examined issues surrounding ‘teachers’, ‘learners’, and the ‘social context’ of ELT. The article then considers the ‘reach’, readership, and potential relevance of ‘Key Concepts’ to debates and practices within ELT, drawing upon publisher records of ELT Journal’s most accessed articles online and most cited articles, and concludes with a discussion of possible future directions for the series.
