"Slideshows are great learning tools. They are used by both students and teachers for a variety of purposes and most important of them all is to summarize key ideas and concepts and present them in such a catchy way that readers enjoy exploring. I am pretty sure you all have ,at some point in your teaching, included slideshows in your lessons and in case you want to discover some other free tools to create slideshows and presentations then I would recommed that you read this list of Free Presentation creation tools for Teachers."

Education technologies & Language learner autonomy - Ca' Foscari, Venice | TELT | Scoop.it

International Seminar, 14th October 2013 - Venice (Italy)

This one-day event is organized by LaDiLS (Laboratory of Didactics of Foreign Languages), as part of the Language Teaching Centre at the Department of Linguistics and Comparative Studies of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.

The Seminar will reflect on how Technologies favour Language Learner Autonomy, considering relevant issues such as:

how technologies can make students more aware and responsible for their own learning processwhat technological applications better foster language learning autonomy at different age and school levelshow technology can help build a bridge between formal and informal language learning.

The aim of the event is to explore the different aspects connecting Technology and Learner Autonomy in foreign language learning, e.g. to understand the educational value and motivational force of the latest technological devices and applications to be used in class, to discuss empirical studies and practical experiences reporting the effects of the use of those technologies on students’ language competence, to reflect on how all this implies an increase in learner autonomy and, as a consequence, on the way learners approach language learning. The Seminar is open to researchers, teachers, policy makers and language specialists with an interest in educational technologies, learner autonomy and language learning development.

5 Ways Student Can Create Audio Slideshows

5 Ways Student Can Create Audio Slideshows | TELT | Scoop.it

Somewhere between a PowerPoint presentation and a full-fledged video is the audio slideshow. Creating audio slideshows can be a good way to add meaning to slides that otherwise might not mean much without a presenter. Here are some ways that students can create audio slideshows.

Shona Whyte's insight:

I haven't done this with students since Slideshare made private sharing part of their premium package, but things have moved on and open sharing of learner presentations has become more common.  Lots of free services in this list, some with time limits.

Language Testing in Europe: Time for a New Framework?
International Conference hosted by Universiteit Antwerpen
27-29 May 2013

We hereby extend a cordial invitation to attend our Second International Conference on Language Testing. This conference will bring together practitioners, policy makers and researchers in order to discuss the following issues related to the use of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in language testing.

• Competence and performance
What is the link between ‘can do’ performance statements and areas of linguistic knowledge? To what extent can or should the levels be made more explicit in terms of required vocabulary and grammar?

• Degree of difficulty of the levels
How can we make sure that our tests are measuring at the CEFR levels we claim they are? What evidence do we have to support our claims?

• Test purpose
Why are we testing? What kind of decisions will be made on the basis of information collected via the test? What will be the consequences of these decisions?

• Practicality
How do we link our tests to the CEFR? How practical, applicable and operational is the CEFR for concrete language testing situations?
You are invited to submit a proposal for a practice-related paper, a research paper, a poster session or a symposium. The scientific committee will designate three submissions as ‘Selected Plenaries’.

Please visit our website (http://www.ua.ac.be/main.aspx?c=.LT-CEFR2013) for any information regarding submission, calendar, venue and programme.
Looking forward to meeting you in Antwerp.

Interesting analysis of powerful presentations showing a common underlying structure - moving back and forth between the present situation and future possibilities.  Useful to help students reflect on their goals in a presentation, and how to attract and hold an audience.
