LEarning and TEaching Corpora (LETEC): data-sharing and repository for research on multimodal interactions

LEarning and TEaching Corpora (LETEC): data-sharing and repository for research on multimodal interactions | TELT | Scoop.it
This is an extended version of the article Wigham, C.R. & Chanier, T. (2013) "LEarning and TEaching Corpora (LETEC): data-sharing and repository for research on multimodal interactions. WorldCALL 2013, 10-13 juillet 2013, Glasgow, Royaume-Uni.

The number of online environments language teachers can employ is constantly growing, offering increased potential for multimodal L2 interaction analysis. This paper introduces the LEarning and TEaching Corpora (LETEC) methodology that links, following international standards, all elements resulting from an online learning situation, whose context is described by a pedagogical scenario and a research protocol. The corpus components include the learning design, the research protocol, the interaction data, all participants’ productions and licences relating to ethics and access rights.

Shona Whyte's insight:

Useful indeed.  Language teachers typically use this kind of corpus to test their intuitions about usage, or in data-driven teaching send their learners to check their own vocabulary choices.  But it's not particularly easy to get started with this database, so this video is a good place to start.

Thewissen 2012: Accuracy across proficiency levels : insights from an error-tagged EFL learner corpus

PhD dissertation using learner corpora:

"The behavioural trends found in the learner corpus sample were subsequently compared with the development implied in the CEF descriptors for grammatical accuracy, vocabulary control, orthographic control, coherence and cohesion. It was revealed that using the development attested by learner corpus data could lead to stronger, more concrete language descriptors for specific learner groups at given proficiency levels."
