From Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) to Mobile Assisted Language Use (MALU)

From Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) to Mobile Assisted Language Use (MALU) | TELT | Scoop.it

In this recent TESL-EJ articles, Jarvis and Achilleos review different  terminology for connecting technology and SLA (TELL, WELL, NBLL).  On the basis of questionnaire data showing EFL users' preferences for mobile technology, they suggest changing two letters in the CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) acronym: Computer becomes Mobile and Learning become Use in MALU (Mobile Assisted Language Use).

The authors conclude that "MALU now needs to be our defining point of reference in keeping TESOL at the vanguard."

Shona Whyte's insight:

Which I suppose is fine if English is your frame of reference.  If the field is to include other languages, it's not so easy to make the argument.

Teachers’ beliefs and practices regarding learner autonomy

Borg, S., & Al-Busaidi, S. (2012). Teachers’ beliefs and practices regarding learner autonomy. ELT Journal, 66(3), 283-292.

Abstract

This paper describes a project about the beliefs and practices regarding learner autonomy (LA) held by English language teachers in a university language centre. A distinctive feature of this project was the manner in which professional development workshops for the teachers were informed by prior research about these teachers’ perspectives on LA. Following a brief rationale for the project, we outline its research component before illustrating how this shaped the teacher workshops. The model for relating research and professional development we illustrate here is one that we believe can be applied more generally in supporting teacher development and institutional change in ELT.

Research Papers in Language Teaching and Learning: Hellenic Open University | TELT | Scoop.it

This peer-reviewed electronic journal is dedicated to publishing research in the domains of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Applied Linguistics. Its mission is two-fold: (a) to promote efficient dissemination of the best of the research that is carried out by students and graduates of the M.Ed. in TESOL of the Hellenic Open University, and (b) to facilitate academic exchange between the students and faculty of that programme and members of the wider professional and academic community on a world-wide basis. The journal publishes full-length articles that focus, in a principled way, on language learning, teaching and assessment and strongly support a conceptual framework that values the integration of theory and practice

‘A basic starter pack’: the TESOL Certificate as a course in survival

Hobbs, 2012, ELT Journal.

Relying on data both from recent TESOL Certificate trainees and from experienced teachers, this paper examines ways in which a focus on survival during TESOL Certificate courses indicates a performance-based philosophy of teacher education and, ultimately, a preference for native speakers, both of which are inconsistent with the changing global ELT market.

Shona Whyte's insight:

Interesting discussion of link between theory and practice and whether teachers believe they need theoretical input to inform decisions about teaching practice.

Key concepts in ELT: Taking stock (Graham Hall)

Free (limited) access to this ELT article:

This article identifies patterns and trends within ‘Key Concepts in ELT’, both since the inception of the feature in ELT Journal in 1993 and during the 17 years of the current editorship. After outlining the aims of the series, the article identifies key themes that have emerged over time, exploring the links between ‘Key Concepts’ pieces and the trends and developments in ELT more generally. It finds that although earlier articles tended to focus on ‘teaching’, ‘learning’, and ‘language’, more recent pieces have examined issues surrounding ‘teachers’, ‘learners’, and the ‘social context’ of ELT. The article then considers the ‘reach’, readership, and potential relevance of ‘Key Concepts’ to debates and practices within ELT, drawing upon publisher records of ELT Journal’s most accessed articles online and most cited articles, and concludes with a discussion of possible future directions for the series.
