Clicking on the real: telling stories and engaging audiences through interactive documentaries. | Televisión Social y transmedia | Scoop.it

"An interesting thing about contemporary media is just how much of it is factual. From journalism to social media, YouTube to reality TV we are surrounded by media that claims to be true. Often this content has a definite agenda; it wants to persuade us, make us click, join in and pass it on. How can we understand our changing relationship to factual media? And why is documentary scholarship well placed to help us do so? Kate Nash explores new interactive dimensions to documentary that may encourage wider engagement."

I'm a little partial to this documentary game as it's produced by Canada's National Film Board (NFB).  The NFB has been recognized as a world leader in transmedia and interactive media.  I grew up watching their films, and love to see themselves reinventing themselves to stay in the game.

I'm looking forward to digging deeper into Fort McMoney.  The format has been described as - where film marries video game.  I'm curious to see if it will impact my feelings about the place.

1. Stories are important
2. Technology has always changed how we see and talk about the world
3. Collaboration is hard
4. The audience are makers and the audience has an audience
5. Authorship vs Openness is a challenge
6. Fail Fast Forward
7. Transmedia can amplify local voices
8. User Experience Design is now part of what we do as storytellers
9. Stories can be both software and hardware
10. We need to show interactive work, not just talk about it
11. Learn to listen. Storytelling is as much about listening as telling
12. Make the interaction the story
13. Be clear about your indicators for success. If you don’t know what success means for your project, you may lose your way.
14. Sometimes you should just delight your audience. Give them things to do that make them feel wonderful

Quote "

“We don’t tell masters of the medium how to craft their art, but we can help them mold their narrative so that it can successfully expand into different media that don’t feature gameplay.”

It’s the spark that excites the imagination, gives life to the machine of parts inside a game, and compels us to play on.

Take film. Theatergoers are along for the ride while gamers actively participate and shape the experience as its hero, but one bible is not easier to write than the other. “For the most part, our concentration is on the story world, not on how it is portrayed in different media,” said Filipek. “If anything, games tend to furnish richer story world content because they are built to accommodate many more hours of experience.”"
