The Five Mistakes Startups Make When Building for Mobile

The Five Mistakes Startups Make When Building for Mobile | Mobile Technology | Scoop.it
In 2009, Farhan Thawar joined mobile development firm Xtreme Labs as VP of Engineering. At the time, it handled accounts for some of the biggest brands in the world — a roster including the largest social networks and popular sports organizations. And they all had one thing in common: They all sensed the urgency to break into mobile in a big way.
This trend has borne itself out. Facebook reported last year that 78% of its daily users in the U.S. access the site from their phones. For Twitter, the figure is 75%, with mobile representing 65% of its ad revenues.
Unfortunately, there are so many misconceptions around mobile development that many newer startups end up squandering time and money they simply can’t afford, says Thawar. Today he helms engineering for Pivotal Labs Canada following Xtreme’s acquisition, and after years observing what works and what doesn’t, he’s honed in on the top five myths that startups must bust to do mobile right.

Mobile Devices As Game Consoles
More evidence smart phones are really game consoles. I agree with Gamasutra's central idea - creating games should be serious fun. As we create mobile games we should embrace the OTHER side of the phone such as:

* GPS.

* Always ON.

* Always NEAR.

* Almost always logged in.

These conditions are UNIQUE to phones and mobile devices. An XBox has an "Event Horizon" where everything STOPS for game play to start or resume. The phone's "Event Horizon" is almost infinite since phones are left ON and we stay logged in.

These unique to mobile devices conditions CAN BE incorporated into game play. Like long distance chess our phones are capable of remembering our and our opponents last moves AND locating us in space and time.

What if I walk into a Starbucks and the Starbucks Game is in progress? I can join in, watch or learn from the game. If all brands are publishers now I would argue all brands are game creators too, even more specifically the coolest brands will become mobile game developers and use our phones and mobile devices as the game consoles they are becoming.

DCIntrospect - Small library of visual debugging tools for iOS | Mobile Technology | Scoop.it

Introspect is small set of tools for iOS that aid in debugging user interfaces built with UIKit. It's especially useful for UI layouts that are dynamically created or can change during runtime, or for tuning performance by finding non-opaque views or views that are re-drawing unnecessarily. It's designed for use in the iPhone simulator, but can also be used on a device.
