Samsung Submits Patent Application for A Smartwatch Screen That Shifts Position

Samsung Submits Patent Application for A Smartwatch Screen That Shifts Position | Mobile Technology | Scoop.it
“Samsung Electronics is an innovation laboratory and it has come up with a few odd and wonderful ideas in the past years. Today, a patent application for a technology that adjusts itself according to the user's needs has been unearthed. ”

Remember, as I pointed out in my presentation on Samsung as a consummate innovator and that patents are actually a lagging indicator of innovative capability of a firm, patent submission is a leading indicator.  Patently Mobile found the patent application for a smartwatch screen that moves by itself to adjust to the user's eyesight.   With the proposed watchface, Samsung wants the screen to move completely to where the user is looking. Samsung is integrating a configuration in that will be able to track the position of the user's eyesight and adjust itself accordingly so that the contents on screen will still be visible.   In addition, the watch face can also be moved towards another person's line of eyesight which is perfect for when the user wants to show a content to someone else.  The patent application suggests that this feature will be able to adjust automatically via face recognition or can be manually adjusted through the use of verbal commands like "go gadget face display" or simply "display.

From the article: "Samsung Electronics is an innovation laboratory and it has  come up with a few odd and wonderful ideas in the past years. Today, a patent application for a technology that adjusts itself according to the user's needs has been unearthed. We're still undecided whether this new idea for wearable devices from Samsung is brilliant or plain pointless, but it definitely will be the first in the industry if it ever becomes a reality."

Danger For Samsung As Smartphone Profits Fall

Danger For Samsung As Smartphone Profits Fall | Mobile Technology | Scoop.it
“This week saw Samsung post its fifth quarterly drop in profits in a row, and the biggest drag on the company line? The mobile division, which saw profits fall by 37.6%. If Samsung's quarterly reports follow their annual cycle, Q3 is going to see another drastic fall. Will Samsung change course?”

Richard Platt's curator insight, August 1, 5:34 PM

This week saw Samsung post its 5th quarterly drop in profits in a row. Guidance at the start of July suggested that profits would fall by 4.2%. The actual drop was 8% year-on-year.  No matter the shine put on the statement, Samsung’s mobile division profits fell by a 3rd, in a quarter where the lions share of flagship smartphone sales would have been expected. Looking forward to the 2nd half of the year, Samsung is expecting to see the tablet market contract as a whole in the second half of 2015, and growth in the smartphone sector to slow down.  The mobile division, which saw profits fall by 37.6%.  The good news is that the mobile business is still turning a profit, and in the competitive smartphone market that should not be ignored. But the trend is clearly downwards, and if Samsung’s quarterly reports follow their annual cycle, Q3 is going to see another drastic fall.

IBeacon helps visually impaired students find their way around Penn State campus

IBeacon helps visually impaired students find their way around Penn State campus | Mobile Technology | Scoop.it
Getting lost on campus is a grand tradition, a collegiate rite of passage to which even the best and the brightest in State College eventually succumb — with the possible exception of Madeline Garber.

Richard Platt's curator insight, July 28, 2:35 PM

Madeline Garber (blind student) at the Summer Academy for Students who are Blind or Visually held a demonstration of the iBeacon, a low-energy Bluetooth device that can provide students — blind and sighted alike — with a better sense of orientation indoors.  -  The demonstration began in Atherton Hall, where Garber — cane and iPhone in hand — traveled across several pathways and busy roads to the cafeteria at Pollock Commons.  Outdoors, she was guided by an app called Blind Square, which tells users where they are, where they are going or what is surrounding them — whether it be a potential obstacle or a Panera Bread.  Garber wore specially designed headphones that allowed her to clearly hear the instructions coming from her iOS device without completely stifling the sounds of the world around her.  “I feel that I can be a lot more independent while using it,” Garber said.  The GPS-driven Blind Square works best outdoors, but once inside it requires the enhancement of the iBeacon, a small Bluetooth device that can transform abstract space into navigable terrain.  Doug Williams, an educational consultant with PaTTAN, placed 13 iBeacons throughout campus, one outside of Atherton Hall and the other 12 inside the Pollock Dining Commons.

For the purpose of the demonstration, Williams and his team installed the iBeacons inside the dining hall after hours, placing units resembling ant traps under food stations, near the dishwasher and even in the kitchen.
